THE NEXT COMMISSIONERS’ MEETING WILL BE HELD AT 7:30 p.m. on August lEth. --------- oOo --------- COMMUNITY APPEARANCE COMMISSION MEETS ON JULY 5, 1986 The following plans were approved: [1] A laundry room addition to a home [2] Additional decking on a home [3] B.B.C.C. tennis court wall replacement Mr. Doug Fleming presented a landscape plan for the site where he will be building a motel. Mr. Fleming stated that he would like to plant more shrubs and trees, but the ordi nance for the parking area does not allow any space for it. According to the town ordinance he must have 1^ parking space per unit. Since his building will have 45 units, he has indicated on the landscape plan sufficient parking space for all these units. He requested that the commission allow him to replace 2 or 3 of the parking places with shrubs and trees for environmental effect. The drainage field will be in accordance with the county regu lation and will not be landscaped or utilized as a parking area. The commission agreed to recommend to the Planning Board to permit Mr. Fleming to use 2 or 3 parking areas for green acres. The commission approved the screening and wooden enclosure around the gar bage dumpsters. Mr. Fleming will submit to the commission a model of the sign he plans to have in front of his motel at a later date. The bulkhead committee gave their report. The June 18th cruise on the canal prov^r very enlightening. Photos were taken of good and poor repairs. A fiberglass company was contacted and the price for repairs with this material would be highly expensive. The members agreed that the most feasible material for replacement of any part of damaged bulkhead should be wood. Right now the current price is around $50 per foot of wooden bulkheading. This should be done with lengths of 8 feet sections. The Federal Govern ment does not permit any bulkheads to be repaired or replaced by cement asbestos. Hence, repairs will have to be made to match existing wooded bulkheads. The Architectural and Community Appearance Committees should be contacted by the owners in case of repairs. Therefore, the commission agreed that standards will have to be established and presented to the town commissioners. At the August Public Town Meeting, the Community Appearance Commission will be showing slides of repairs done on bulkheads. ------- oOo -------- RESCUE EQUIPMENT DEMONSTRATED Once again this year the Pine Knoll Association sponsored a demonstration of the rescue equipment at Ocean Park. Pete Peterson and Gil Millington, both trained and experienced in rescue work made the presentation. Peterson explained that there are two very important things to remember when em barking on an attempted rescue: 1. See that someone on the beach takes charge, dispatches someone to call the Rescue Squad while you are in the water and organizes the beach end of the job. 2. Make your own personal safety your primary concern. Take a moment to plan ho|^^ you are going to do it and, when you approach the victim, stay out of his reach. the equipment for him to grab but do not let him grab you. In his frightened state he can grab you so hard you cannot effect the rescue.
