Prior to their regular meeting on February lOth, the Co:.x.issioners met in a work
session to consider what action to take on the flood control problem which Commissioner
Shedd and his committee has been considering for over a year. Col. Paul Dennison, re-

COMMISSIONEKb essentially the recommendation made at the public hearing last year.
Much work has been done since that time. The Committee has come up
—with several ideas and suggestions. CAMA and the Environmental Manage-
iVienL Division of the N. C. Dept, of Natural Resources and Community
Development have not approved the plan which ultimately calls for drainage into the canal
in the event of a two-year storm. Several other alternatives have had to be ruled out
•r one reason or another. Col. Dennison recommended that the town request the EMD to
nsider two alternatives. One would be to grant a variance, allowing this to be done
because of the specific problem here in Pine Knoll Shores; or [2] that the canal be re
classified from SA to SB thereby allowing such a runoff under these exceptional circum
stances. At the meeting following this work session it was agreed that Majror Hanan would
make this request.
The first order of business at the regular meeting was the opening of sealed bids
for fire apparatus. Commissioner l\lhite opened two envelopes but only one of them contained
a bid. The second company believed their bid would not be competitive and declined the
opportunity to make one. Commissioner VJhite said that they would have to advertise again.
Two of the Commissioners made an appeal to residents. Commissioner Shedd asked that
residents be reminded that trash must not be put out on the right-of-way more than 12 hours
before pickup and containers must not remain there longer than 12 hours after pickup.
These regulations have been printed here in Shore Line before but still some folks persist
in disregarding them. It is in the interest of every resident that the town be as attrac
tive as possible and simple observance of these measures can make a big difference.
Commissioner Sotir said that more EMT's are needed on the Rescue Squad. He asked
for volunteers. As soon as enough Volunteers come forth a training program will be set
