PAGE 2 • Commissioner Shedd told us that Oakleaf Bridge had to be repaired and resurfaced in March. Other pot holes were repaired and corners resurfaced throughout the town. He also reported that upon recommendation of the state the Town would not seek a reclassification of the canals from SA to SB but rather would seek a variance to allow this runoff only in the case of extreme emergency. There were 6 Rescue calls during March, 132 police calls, 1 fire call (false alarm) and 76 traffic violations. The Land Use Update is complete and a copy will be available for your inspection before May 26th when two hearings will be held for your convenience: at 2:00 P.M. and again at 7:30 P.M. Commissioners declared May 10-16 as Municipal Clerk's week in honor of Town Clerk Corinne Geer and her assistant, Sylvia Shaver. Bob Gallo presented an assessment of the pros and cons of purchasing a new fire engine or making do with the present Pumper #1. Mayor Hanan made several announcements. A military operation called "Solid Shield" will begin on April 25th and last through night operations on May 4th. This will involve Harriers and helicopters flying from Bogue Field and landing on the USS Saratoga anchored off shore. 40,000 troops will be involved. If dangerously low flights cause concern notify the Town Hall or Mayor Hanan at home. Such low flying is not part of the plan. The Core Sound MOA, about which there has been controversy, will lift the original 100 ft. altitude flying to 500 ft. on weekdays over an 11-mil^^ wide area on weekdays. On weekends over the Cape Lookout area they will remain at 3000 ft. Some people feel that it is still a threat to fishing and recreation activities. It is suggested that you write Senators Sanford or Helms or Congressman Jones if you wish to have your feelings known. Trash on Salterpath Rd. is a serious eye sore. Our own volunteers can be helpful in cleaning up our town if enough men respond to the mayor's request at Men's Night. However, the county and the state will take action against those who litter. The fine is now up to $200. If you see a violation and can identify the vehicle--license plate number is best--report to the town. Many residents have not yet obtained the required town license tag for their cars. Please attend to this without delay. Also, now is the timie to have your re-entry permit stamped for 1987. If you wait until it's time to evacuate it will be too late to have it validated. Another safety measure in case of emergency; See that your house or living unit number is clearly visible on your own place. Don't rely on a mailbox which is across the street, for instance. If you need police, fire or rescue assistance they must be able to find you quickly. In February we told you about a bill coming before the North Carolina General Assembly which would permit mobile homes in any single family zone. We had been given the wrong number. The correct number is Senate Bill 306. One of you followed through by contacting his senator and he, in turn, called Shore Line to say he knew of no such bill. We jumped the gun with the wrong number. But there is such a proposed bill now, dated April 7, 198 7. It says that a city cannot enforce zoning ordinances which prohibit manufactured homes as long as they comply with all requirements applicable to single family homes in that zone. Nor can this bill preempt valid restrictive covenants running with the land. It may be that these conditions protect Pine Knoll Shores but it should be watched. The concern and follow through of this senator was impressive and made us feel good about our representation in Raleigh.
