COMMISSIONERS MEET
Prior to the May meeting of the commissioners a public hearing was held concerning
the proposed ordinance dealing with bulkhead repair. It came out that it is important
to have firm guidelines written into the ordinance so that if repairs need to be made
they can be done without resort to the various committees' approval. Time is of the
essence.
It also was pointed out that the State building code has certain requirements
which cannot be altered by local ordinances so it was recommended that certain mater
ials, hardware etc. specified in the proposed ordinance be deleted. The Town Attorney
will rework these sections and will present the revised version to the commissioners
for their approval.
At the regular meeting the commissioners gave their reports. Commissioner Johnson
also proposed a budget amendment making some $112,000 available in the budget so that
the bid for the new fire engine submitted by Pierce of Kinston could be accepted even
though it would not be disbursed until the 87-88 fiscal year. Another budget adjust
ment concerning the overtime of police, administrative cost of the Shore Line and
utility charges could be covered. Both of these were passed.
It was also voted to give Sylvia Shaver permanent status as tax collector and
deputy Town Clerk. She has completed her six months probation period. Beverley
Blaylock was also given permanent status as office assistant.
Commissioner Johnson also proposed an Administrative Office and Financial Policy
which was accepted and will be posted in the lobby for your information. The item
which most concerns the public is that citizens whose request for information requires
excessive office time must make an appointment. Thursdays from 1:00 to 3:00 are re
served for these appointments.
