Page -3- Besides review of new construction plans the commission checks on complaints about ^Bkpecific unsightly conditions. When indicated they make diplomatic house calls. This was done throughout the year. They also met with local builders concrning communi cation problems with the commission and with the Architectural Control Committees of the property owners'associations. They met several times with PIKSKO and Pine Knoll Association to resolve difficulties that arose and to make "joint suggestions". They also worked with Pine Knoll Association and the Planning Board on establishing standards for bulkhead repair. Recommendations were made to the commissioners concerning many improvements which can be made in the appearance of the Town. m For the biggest improvements in "Prettiness"/ the Community Appearance Commission this year has begun some award giving in an effort to encourage further upgrading of the Town's already good looks. The awards are in two categories: commercial and residential. This year's com mercial award was presented to the Ramada Inn for the continuing fine maintenance of their welccsning "front yard". This sort of thing has already proved contagious; the Sea Hawk has put in some ambitious plantings, and they also have a new sign. The Doug Fleming Motel, to be known as The Windjammer, is following a good landscaping plan and will be noticed with pleasure by all who enter Pine Knoll Shores from the east side. The residential award was given to the group of neighbors who landscaped the entrance to Arborvitae Drive with a lovely fence and appropriate shrubs. Other residents ;night get some good ideas for their own approaches to Pine Knoll Shores by swinging ound for a look at the Arborvitae project. The Community Appearance Commission never ceases to commend the Garden Club for^ the work done by its members; however, there are lots of things that can be done quite simply by plain old proud citizens, and this awards program is the enticement for creative landscaping and other ideas that lead to the beautifying of our example setting Town. ^ MARY DOLL --------- oGo --------- BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT The Board of Adjustment met on May 12 to hear the appeal of Mr. and Mrs. J.
