PINE KNOLL SHORES RADIO EXERCISE
As part of its ongoing program to be prepared to cope with the after-effects of a
disastrous hurricane, the tovm is conducting a radio communications exercise on June 25th^p
The Police and Fire Departments, Civil Preparedness Directorate, Rescue Squad, and Town
Officials will participate.
The objectives of the exercise are:
1. To test the effectiveness of the town's radios in various locations-
2. To challenge the ability of department chiefs to control their activities by-
radio under simulated conditions of a disaster. And
3. To provide the participants with training and practice in the operation of
radio voice ccanmunications.
Realistic situations requiring participants to move from place to place have been
written into an exercise scenario. Graphic descriptions of casualties and damage may
startle outside listeners on VHP scanners and citizen band radios. Be assured,it is
all fictional. The exercise will be cancelled if there is an immediate threat of an
actual hurricane.
This conmunications exercise is another first for Pine Knoll Shores in Carteret
County. It is indicative of the Town's continuing concern for the safety and well-being
of its residents and visitors.

OUR NEW NEIGHBORS
The year 1987 will be a long-remembered one for Janie and Cal Briley! In March thej^^
were married and in April began their move to 207 Oakleaf Drive and they are still getting
settled. That's because two households had to be combined into one.
Cal served in the U.S. Air Force and upon retirement from the service, he became a^
mathematics professor at Atlantic Christian College in Wilson. He lived there until his
marriage to Janie and the move to Pine Knoll Shores. Earl Dunn, who was a builder here
in town, was Cal's cousin, and Cal visited Earl and Lottie many times, getting an intro
duction to the town and its way of life.
Meanwhile, Janie, an administrative secretary at Pitt Memorial Hospital, was
familiar with the area, having a brother who lives in Atlantic Beach. She has one son
who currently attends East Carolina University and is serving as a counselor at Camp
Sea Gull.
Now they are a family. They both enjoy golf and have found the club, beach-walk,
fish, boat and bowl. Cal and Janie are anxious to become a part of the coiimunity.
We who appreciate and enjoy Pine PCnoll Shores think it is very special to begin
a new married life together in this place, halfway between Camelot- and Shangri-La.

It is a great pleasure to introduce Pine Knoll Shore’s newest and youngest resident.
Miss Sophia Elaine Shelton. This beautiful baby was born May 25th to Connie and Bill
Shelton and came heme to 155 Arborvitae Drive on May 25th. She is their first child,
and she weighed 5 lbs. 12 ozs. and was 19^ inches long! I
