Mayor Hanan announced that because of the popularity of the N. C. Aquarium, more space is needed in the future which will mean removal of the library; further the Pine Knoll Shores Town Hall is also running out of space so a committee will start to work on the most expedient way to acquire the needed area for both. Hurricanes are always a concern; to improve evacuation traffic, the Mayors' Assoc iation of Carteret County is promoting literature for hotels, condos and other rentals which encourages the visitors to leave as soon as the first warning is issued. It is hoped we never have to invite out guests to leave £;o unceremoniously. LIZ BRITTON --------- oOo --------- PLANNING BOARD Meeting in July, the Planning Board, in addition to those actions reported at the Commissioners meeting, recommended that the organization and duties of the board be spelled out in the ordinances. They also considered an amendment to the sign ordinance to cover residential properties, recommendations for house numbering, a definition of "family" for our ordinances, and the possibility of rezoning the shopping center site. The board also requested the Building Inspector to review the engineering study which was part of the approved building plan for Fairway Subdivision to ascertain whether or not it is being followed. --------- oGo --------- COMMUNITY APPEARANCE COMMISSION The Community Appearance Commission met twice in July. Special attention was given to the alignment of houses and a policy recommended. They are also looking carefully at the landscaping and lighting plans of the Holiday Inn addition. Members inspected 12 proposed structures and house plans. Unsightly lots were noted and action taken to improve their appearance. A plan to construct a decorative fence and plantings at Ramsey Drive and Arborvitae Court were approved. Ed Olson has received permission from the Crimson family, owners of the property involved. Mayor Hanan told the group there have been complaints about fuel storage for boats seen on residential property. They were asked to be on the lookout for this. Not only does this detract from the appearance of the property, it is in violation of Fire Mar shal regulations. ---------- oOo - -- -- -- -- DON'T MAKE WAVES! The expression "Don't make waves" has come to have many subtle connotations, usually accompanied by the raised eyebrow. But let us not forget the real meaning of the phrase. For the boaters in Pine Knoll Shores channels it means "No Wake"! Still, many persist in ignoring the warning. Not only can this be in violation of Federal Regulations but it is in violation of the Town Ordinance as well. 15-3.3 states: SPEED. Boats shall be operated in a safe manner at all times, with due regard for the safety of persons and property. No boat shall be operated at such speed as to leave a wake, and, in no event, shall such speed exceed five [5] miles per hour, except when more than two hundred [200] feet from the shore in the Atlantic Ocean or Bogue Sound. [Violation of Town Ordinances is a misdemeanor subject to up to $50 fine].
