consideration of how the swales would be designed and placed would be made. Right now the only thing to consider is whether or not this restriction of impermeable materials is to be imposed. The matter of re-combination of previously recorded plats, although announced as a subject, did not come up for discussion. The meeting was attended by about 50-60 people and lasted for an liour. It is evident that this flood control plan is a matter of great interest to a large number of our residents. COMMISSIONERS MEET At the regular board meeting Commissioner Jolmson reported that the fiscal year had ended with the books balanced, w^ith revenues collected in excess of expectation and expenditures lower. He said that 100?^ of taxes had been collected with the exception of one property which happens to be in litigation right now. He commended the office staff for these accomplishments saying that in all his years in municipal government he had never known this to happen before. Commissioner Roderick presented the new contract with Waste Industries for approval This was done, he also announced that a portion of Oakleaf Drive from Salter Path Road [to a point at least 100 yards short of his own residence, he emphasized], and a few other spots in town would be repaved sometime in July. Coimiissioner Roderick also mentioned a problem we have dealt with time after time in this newsletter: leaving trash on the right-of-way on days when there is no pick-up. We realize that this can be a problem for those who will not be in town on pick-up day. We suggest that you arrange with a neighbor to put your trash out for you if you have to leave and cannot be here. Some people use bags thinking, perhaps, that that eliminat the possibility of a container rolling around until they come back again. Good thought- except that the bags don't hold. Animals break into them and garbage is strewn all around. Reluctant to ask a neighbor? Your neighbor would rather put it out for you than have to pick it up when it spills, for sure. Ccsnmissioner Shedd reported no residential and no conmerical permits issued in June There were 10 miscellaneous permits and 3 certificates of occupancy. Reporting on the Planning Board, he moved the final approval of Forrest Dunes and Fiddler's Ridge. At this time the preliminary approval of Pine Knoll Village and the ordinance restricting impervious material to 25% in the flood prone area were voted. Commissioner Sotir reported 7 emergency rescue calls. He said that Chuck Zaminer had taken over as the new chief. He also made an appeal for more volunteers for this most important work. Commissioner White reported 194 police calls — one an armed robbery — and one fire call. Mayor Hanan announced that DOT will be clearing the swales on Salter Path Road in the next month or two. There are many small trees that have taken root there and resi dents who would like them need only come dig them up. If left there they will be lost. Among the varieties recognized are cedars, pines and wax myrtle. 'rhe mayor also mentioned the "Festival of Trees" which Hospice of Carteret County is planning this year. The announcement submitted to Shore Line by Hospice is to be found later in this newsletter.
