SHORE LINE Published by The Town of Pine Knoll Shores In The Interests Of Its Citizens Town Hall: 247-4353 Emergency Phones: Police: 728-3772 Fire & Rescue: 728-4111 The proposed new ordinance declaring Pine Knoll Shores a sea turtle sanctuary was the first subject of discussion at this hearing. Questions of enforcement came up and it was learned that violation of the ordinance would be a misdemeanor. Procedure to be followed by anyone witnessing the disturbance of turtles or their nests is to call police. All vehicles except those of commercial fishermen [who must obtain permits] are prohibited from driving on the beach during nesting season. The model zoning ordinance was next under discussion. Some clarification was re quested concerning building heights, and the use of stories in describing them. Art Browne requested clarification of the discrepancies between requirements for B-1 and R-2 as opposed to MF-2 in regard to minimum living space and the inclusion of easement areas in determining the setbacks. The general response was that there should be no difference. The matter will be referred to the Planning Board for recommendation. Following the hearing the official board meeting was held. The first item on the agenda was a presentation by the Corps of Engineers of a proposed plan to dispose of spoils from dredging the Inland Waterway [of about 270,000 cubic yards] onto our beach. Such a project was carried on on a much larger scale in Atlantic Beach two years ago and another at Emerald Isle last year. The area to be dredged is west of the high rise bridge and extends past Spooners Creek to Buoy 17. At one time^when we had suffered erosion, we had requested that our area be considered when another project was planned. Now, of course, we have experienced the build-up of our beach and it may not seem so important but it is believed that on the whole it would be beneficial. CAMA has identified the areas of greatest erosion potential and recommends that the spoils be deposited there. One is near the Dogwood Ocean Park, the other off of Westport. The dredging would be done in late November or early December of this year. The spoils would be piped across the Sound and across Bogue Banks to a point beyond the vege tation at the ocean front. A study of this will be made to see if it is beneficial to Pine Knoll Shores. Ease ments and consent of affected property owners would be required. Post Office Box 757, Atlantic Beach, N.
