COMMISSIONERS MEET
Mayor Hanan announced that September 17-23 be declared Constitution Week. He invited
Viola Del Balso to lead the assemblage in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Ms. Del
Balso then gave an informative speech outlining the history of the founding of our glorious
nation through the efforts that went into the writing of our Constitutution.
Mayor Hanan presented Sgt. Haywood Quinn, of our Police Department, the Advanced
Law Enforcement Certificate. This award is issued by the N. C. Criminal Education and
Training commission and is earned by obtaining necessary hours of training and experience.
Commissioner Johnson reported on the budget revenue collection. Fifteen per cent,
or $124,000 has been received as of the end of August. A motion was made to amend the
limit of 20% of town funds that shall be placed with a single financial institution to
50%. The motion was approved. Johnson also requested approval for notification to the
county to hold town elections in November.
Commissioner Roderick stated that every two years North Carolina mandates that all
town bridges be inspected. He also read the report of the road engineering firm that was
hired to inspect the drainage difficulties experienced at the corner of Beechwood and
Sycamore. Various proposals involved considerable expense. It was decided by the Board
to reduce the existing lip surrounding the drain from eight inches to four inches. The
flooding problem will continue to be monitored to determine if this fix alleviates the
problem. It was pointed out that a total of 10 acres drain into this intersection.
On the subject of refuse collection for commercial and multi-dwelling units. Waster
Industries was asked to provide an estimate of the additional costs to the town. Their
response indicated it would be less costly to offer a subsidy every month to each of these
units rather than add new customers to refuse collection routes. The present contract
with Waste Industries is $61,000 a year. [See the report on the Commissioners' work

Roderick also requested approval to use two parking spaces at the boat storage location
to store 6' x 6' recycling containers. Pine Knoll Shores will be used as a pilot project
for recycling in the county.
