in! We had pelicans in the bathroom, in the kitchen, on the balcony, in the hawk's cage.,
and they just kept coming! Since a pelican eats 5 pounds of whole fish a day, we felt
fortunate that Marine Fisheries could keep us supplied. We were badly overloaded, but we
didn't want to refuse anything that needed our help.
Many other species came into OWLS that week; almost all were suffering from hypothermia
and just needed warmth and food. We cared for: ruddy ducks, pied-billed grebe, coot,
mallard, heron, egret, cardinal, rufous-sided towhee, loon, mourning dove, warblers, and
others. While some died, we are thrilled to have been able to release many back to the
wild already, with some still recovering.
We mourn the thousands of pelicans who have died on our beaches. This gentle bird
deserved better.
OWLS NEEDS: Donations. Caring for this unexpected onslaught of patients depleted our funds.

HELP HELP HELP
Your volunteer Fire Department is desperately looking for someone to attend our monthly
business meeting and take the minutes of our business meetings.
We are an equal opportunity employee.
Time: Every second Monday of the month from 7 p.m. to approximately 8:30 p.m.
Duties: To record the happenings and various conversations that take place at our monthly
business meeting. Then through that special magic that is years alone, turn these
bits of information into an intelligent business report.
Pay: Equal parity as with all other volunteers of PKS. As a bonus, you'll earn the
undying gratitude and admiration of every member of the Volunteer Fire Department.

PINE KNOLL SHORES WOMEN'S CLUB
Circle Friday, January 26, 1990 on your calendars for the first meeting of the new
year for the Pine Knoll Shores Women's Club. It will be held at the Town Hall with a social
time at 9:30 a.m., business meeting at 10:00 a.m. and following this, Ruth Muller, travel
guide and director, will present a program entitled "Fantastik Switzerland." Sounds like
a great way to learn about another country without leaving home. All current members and
and new Pine Knoll Shores residents are urged to attend and bring your visitors too!

ANCIENT MARINERS
December was a short month and many minds were on the coming Holidays. However, Team
#3, Captain Libby McCulley, still holds on to first place. Team #2, Captain Lester Scarpone,
has wiggled into second place.
The men's 200+ Club had repeaters only with Dave Hasulak 204; A1 Van Essendelft, 204;
Hank Ingram, 203; Duane Mead, 203; and Frank Herbst, 201.
The women's 180+ Club was joined by Libby McCulley with 181, 182. The only repeater
was Millie Herbst at 180 and a nice 214.
Men's 500+ series had repeaters only: Dave Hasulak, 545; Lester Scarpone, 542; Frank
Herbst, 528, 528; Duane Mead, 525; Hank Ingram 515, 511; and Bob Gallo, 507; 501.
