Most were active—even avid—readers before their eyes began to fail and find themselves at a loss in their present condition. Such a person is Bill Macdonald. Bill called us one day all excited about a new machine he had acquired, the "E-Z Reader". It had done such wonders for him he wanted to share the information about it with others. Indeed, he had spoken to the editor of the News-Times and there appeared an article in that paper that you may have read a couple of months ago. The things that this machine had done for him were (1) made it possible to read newspapers, (2) to look at snapshots of family etc., (3) to read the labels on cans or on pill bottles—surfaces which are curved. He demonstrated these uses for me. This is a portable machine—a handset, really—which can be plugged into a TV set or monitor. It's light weight and requires no setting or focusing. You can choose your fixed focus lens. When the "window" is held over the print it comes out on the screen and it is easily moved along the text or the picture. Bill has other help, too, which I was shown. There are tapes. There is even a machine put out by Xerox which will scan a printed text and turn it into speech. If you are interested in learning more about these readers should call Bill (247-4266) and he will be glad to arrange a demonstration for you just as he did for me. He emphasizes that he is not promoting these instruments. It's not a sales gimmick. It is just that they have enhanced his life so much he would like to share his pleasure with others. MCK MAY AND JUNE BIRTHDAYS TO CELEBRATE Is your birthday in May or June? Then come to the joint party planned for 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 31st at the Ocean Park off Dogwood Circle.
