Page -5- The Mauldins have reached Carteret County through John's roots in Charlotte; his mother and brother are still there, and that's where John and Diane were planning to retire, but they came here for a look and sud denly found themselves buying a house. John says that, after World War II, it was hard to find a job in the South so he went to the Midwest to seek his fortune. Diane grew up in Chicago and they've been living in Deerfield, Illinois, where John worked many years for Bagcraft Corporation, first as a supervisor, and later as an "over-the'road" driver [that's one who drives on the big highways-John covered 26 Eastern states and still managed to be home weekends!] They have two sons - one in Orlando and one in Mundelein, Illinois. And Diane, a supervisor for the Customer Service Department of the disposable aluminum division of Ekco Products, worked with dealers, and also travelled a lot, but managed to be around at the same time John was. However, since she spent so many hours on the phone in her office, she almost wishes she didn't have to have one anymore. They are both retired now, although Diane isn't sure she won't seek a job eventually, accustomed as she is to a career. They are coping first with settling into their house, but are not giving up their wanderings, especially to a timeshare they have in Florida on an island similar in size and shape to Bogue Banks. And John, as I was leaving, sighed and said he had better get out and start blowing away some more leaves from the yard. Those of us who grew up in the Midwest only had to deal with leaves in the fall, but around here, as we all find out, leaves are a full time assignment. MARY DOLL DESERT STORM SERVICEMEN HONORED The July Fourth Celebration at the Bogue Banks Country Club was espec ially meaningful as serVice personnel who served in the Persian Gulf conflict were honored. The servicemen were invited to attend this gala day in a joint celebration sponsored by the Country Club and the Town of Pine Knoll Shores. The day was culminated by an array of spectacular fireworks at early evening. The Bogue Banks Country Club and the Town canal are two assets that enhance the life style of Pine Knoll Shores residents. Boating on the canal, golfing, tennis and social activites all offer a variety of activites that our residents can enjoy year round at our location along the beautiful shore of eastern Carolina. PINE KNOLL GARDEN CLUB The Pine Knoll Shores Garden Club had it's luncheon and installation of new officers' meeting at the Galley Stack Restaurant on June 12th. Clare Winslow, the Hospitality Chairman, was in charge of the arrangements which were lovely. Patricia Flinn, a former President of the Club, installed the new officers. Vern Wallace, the outgoing President, thanked her officers, Board members and all who contributed to a most successful year for the Garden Club. Joan Dawson, the incoming President, presented Vern with a pretty mailbox and doormat from the members. The Club continues to be busy caring for all the plants at the N.C. Aquarium. They plant, weed and water all the plantings at the two medians on Salter Path Road and also care for the six new trees they have planted
