Commissioner Gibson commended Officer Hellersperk and Sgt. Gibson for
requa 1ification on the pistol range. He thanked all residents for their
support during his 6 year tenure on the Board and then turned in his key
to the Executive Washroom, handcuffs, radio and pistol [all products of the
local toy store].
Commissioner Hasulak named Andy Turney as Captain of the Fire Depart
ment and renamed Frank Herbst and Hank Ingram as Lieutenants.
Commissioner Roderick reported that 5 residential permits, and 5 Cer
tificates of Occupancy worth $671,000 to the town ratables, were issued in
November. He has asked the Planning Board to study all town codes and
covenants to see whether they are in line with those of PIKSCO and the Pine
Knoll Association.
Mayor Hanan nominated Waldo Gray to fill the vacancy on the Planning
Board due to Dick Shultz's election to the Board of Commissioners. Mayor
Hanan also wished to thank Senator Beverly Perdue for her assistance in
finally receiving the State's report on the water drainage project. The
State will study the effects of pumping drainage water into the canal during
periods of extreme flooding. This proposal would require hiring a contractor
with the necessary hoses and pumping equipment to remove the water.
Ted Goetzinger presented to the Board a petition signed by 130 resi
dents in support of Bob Gallo as Commissioner of Finance.
The Board next approved the change in the ordinance concerning tree
removal, brush clearing and the identification of beach grasses designated
for beach dune protection.
Ken Hanan closed the meeting by thanking all for their support during
his a years on the Board of Commissioners.
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS SPECIAL MEETING
The Board of Commissioners met Monday, December 2, 1991 along with the
Commissioners-e1ect to discuss further the roles of department heads and
that of Mayor and Mayor pro Tempore.
Commissioner David Hasulak was unanimously asked to serve as Mayor .
Commissioner-e1ect Mary Kanyha was unanimously asked to serve as Mayor
ProTempore.
After discussion it was agreed that areas of responsibility would be
Blanchard, Streets and Public Property; Kanyha, Planning and Inspections;
Musgrave, Police; Schultz, Administration and Finance.
PUBLIC HEARING
The Board of Commissioners held a public hearing Tuesday, December 10,
to consider adding to the list of maritime forest vegetation and trees,
species of special concern, and to change the size of trees which must have
a permit before cutting, to three inches in diameter as measured up from
the base of the tree.
To facilitate inspection, the lot lines and the proposed structure area
shall be made accessible by clearing brush and vines [except trees exceeding
three [3] inches in diameter], for personal safety, visibility, and freedom
of movement. Special consideration must be given to preserving as much
natural area as possible and to preserving all plants of special concern
as designated in subsection 21-4.6. The plant list is available for inspec^^B
tion at Town Hall.
