HOUSE FIRES STILL DEADLIRST Home fires continue to take the most lives, according to the Nat ional Fire Protection Association's report on fire losses. 80% of all fire deaths are the result of home fires. In 1993, there were 1,952,500 fires which resulted in 4,635 civilian deaths. The National Fire Protection Association recommends: 1. Increased awareness of the need for adequate smoke detectors. 2. Strategically located and well maintained fire extinguishers. 3. Family fire drills.(Prearranged escape routes, get out fast and stay out, protect lives first and property second, etc.) The PKS Fire Dept, is available to assist all town residents in purchasing, installing and proper usage proper usage of fire ex tinguishers and smoke detectors. They will also assist with planning escape procedures. If you would like more informa tion regarding these services, contact any PKS Fireman or call Andy Turney at Town Hal 1(247-4353). INSPECTIONS AND PLANNING During November 1994, the PKS Inspections Dept, issued two res- identical permits for a construc tion value of $229,500 and 16 miscellaneous permits for a con struction value of $81,000. There were five Certificates of Occupancy issued during this period. Hurricane Gordon brushed by our coastline around November 18th. Although the storm did not make landfall, PKS oceanfront suffered significant shoreline erosion caused by the large surf and high, sweeping tides. Anywhere from 5 feet to as much as 30 feet or greater of erosion occurred. Near ly all oceanfront beach access steps and dune decks were damaged or destroyed. There was some shal low sound side flooding during the period of high tide. The wave ac tion caused by the high winds con tributed to the collapse of several bulkheads and seawalls in the in terior portions of the canal and properties fronting Bogue Sound. OCEAN FRONT AND SOUND FRONT PRO PERTY OWNERS SHOULD BE AWARE that repairing, relocating, and rebuild ing damaged or destroyed structures (including beach access steps) re quires a local building permit and in some cases may require a CAMA (Coastal Management) permit also. Please contact the PKS Inspections Dept. prior to commencing any activity in these areas to avoid any delay or inconvenience with re pair or replacement work. ANCIENT MARINERS Records were broken during the month of November, as two of our bowlers had super-high games - Bob Gallo for the men, with a 266 and Del Ericksen for the women, with a 203. Gordon Heuter with a 236 game and Janie Briley with a 199 are in 2nd place for the season. Great bowling. Ancient Mariners! Pres. Wally Williams announced there would be no bowling on Jan. 2nd, but the day would be made up the end of the season in April. The mid-season party will be a standup buffet at the Ramada Inn on Tuesday, January 17th,6:00 to 8:00. Faye Szypulski 5
