BEACH PRESERVATION ASSOCIATION OF PINE KNOLL SHORES The Beach Preservation Association of PKS met with the Pine Knoll Shores Board of Commissioners at their regular monthly meeting on August 13, 1996 in Town Hall. Dr. Ruth Sweeny stated that the 4.7 miles of PKS beach front are in urgent need of renourishment. The BPA of PKS has been meeting for over a year researching solutions to preserve the beach as well as funding solutions to pay the costs. The BPA believes that a beach replenishment by Corp of Engineers was Welcome h both physically and financially do-able. Ian Hartwell, PhD, an oceanographer, made a slide presentation illustrating the severity of the problem. He showed positive results of successful beach replenishment projects in Maryland and Florida. Dan Ericksen presented the financial information in the absence of Board member Dick Levin, who was unable to attend due to illness. The BPA of PKS is asking the Town of PKS to be the official governmental sponsoring organization for the beach replenishment project and to set up a special tax district to assess and collect funds for this project. The BPA also requested that the Town arrange for a special bond issue to accomplish the beach replenishment project. The proposal for cost sharing would place over 85% of the cost on beachfront property owners. Questions asked were answered by Mr. Ericksen and Dr. Hartwell. For information or questions about the Beach Preservation Association, please call Dr. Ruth Sweeny (726-2838) V l^esidents Arlene and John Terrell have just moved into 110 Live Oak Court.
