Hurricane Preparation!!!! Pine Knoll Shores Director of Emergency Management, Ed Kuhary, has announced that the 1997 Hurricane Awareness Meeting will be at the NC Aquarium. The date is Thursday, June 12, 1997, and the time is 7:30 p.m. This is always a very informative meeting, and a time to review your personal procedures and preparations in case of a storm. PINE KNOLL SHORES CARDEN CLUB After a depressing gray, colorless winter dating back to Fran in September, Pine Knoll Shores is now alive with color, thanks to the thousands of azaleas blooming along the streets in town. At the Pine Knoll Shores Garden Club meeting in Town Hall on April 9, 1997 our speaker was Marianna Brow, Director of the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo. She shared with the members three methods of propagating new azalea plants which produce faithful clones of the parent azaleas. At our Arbor Day ceremony on March 21, at Hall Haven, Garden Club planted a young live oak to help put a balance back into a town that lost so many trees during last summer's hurricanes. President Clare Winslow gave the welcoming address and introduced Mayor Reese Musgrave, who thanked the club for its work throughout the town and gave an inspirational talk. Dot Belding reminded us that 1997 is the 125th anniversary of Arbor Day and presented an interesting history of its institution as a national holiday. Lenora Roberson conducted the flag salute. Our annual Plant Sale was a resounding success because of the generous cooperation of all the town's residents in purchasing flowers for their gardens. We thank everyone for their magnanimous support of this project. Have you noticed how beautiful the Garden Club plantings at the various main thoroughfares in town are looking? This improvement is due to the efforts of all the members who helped spread the pine straw and especially to Maureen and Jay Kocher and Lois Jean O'Keefe and Nan Gildner. Thanks, Guys! EMS SQUAD #65 The Squad held its April meeting on March 31 at Town Hall. Commissioner Emily White announced that funds have been approved for the construction of two offices in the garage area, one for EMS and one for the Fire Department. Plans are in progress and construction should begin in July. Training officer, Rita Whalen, demonstrated* the sager splints. These will replace the old hare splints which take up so much room in ambulances and are more difficult to use. Members met at Town Hall April 7 to wash and clean both ambulances inside and out. Malcolm Bone made arrangements for the food enjoyed after the work was completed. The Nominating Committee presented their slate for election of officers. New officers will be elected at the May meeting. May 17-24 is "EMS Week." The squad is making plans to celebrate a day and invites all residents of Pine Knoll Shores to attend. It was a lot of fun last year showing off our new ambulance, giving out balloons, etc. Please watch for the time and place and come join us. Joan Libby gave a laminated card with all important radio code #s to each member for quick reference and to study. There will be a test at the May meeting. Have a safe and happy spring! Remember to call 911 for any emergency help...we will respond! Teddy Wimberley, Chief On Monday, March 24, 1997, the Town of Pine Knoll Shores Emergency Medical Services Squad was presented a check for $4,000.00 by 2
