MAY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS MEETING
BUDGET FY 1997-98
The proposed budget for FY 1997-98 was presented to the Board of Commissioners for
consideration. Estimated revenues and expenditures are $1,583,989. The new budget
proposes a tax rate of 16 cents per $100 of valuation, due to property revaluation of
$387,500,000. This is a reduction of 5 cents from the previous year. The ad valorem taxes
will generate $620,000 of the total estimated revenues. Other revenues will come from
automobile taxes, state collected taxes, investments, reimbursements, grants and fees charged
and transfers from the Powell Bill. Every effort has been made for a revenue neutral budget.
RESOLUTIONS
The Board adopted a Resolution supporting N.C. General Assembly Bill 492, introduced
by Senator Beverly Perdue, to appropriate funds to develop a regional wastewater system.
They also adopted another resolution supporting the renovation and expansion of the Knapp
Building, which houses the Institute of Government. The Institute's resources are very
valuable to municipalities and county governments.
WATER REPORT
The Town has received a copy of a letter written to the Rural Development Manager in
New Bern by the attorney for Carolina Water Service, strongly objecting to the RECD making
any funds available for a duplicate water system in Pine Knoll Shores. The design for the new
water system should be completed by the end of July, with bidding to begin in mid October.
