#"T"he September I edition of the Shoreline was in the latter NORTH'CAROLiNA stages of going AQUARIUMS to press when Hurricane Bonnie hit our area in late August; however area residents may be interested in knowing how the aquarium fered during "the stonn that wouldn't leave." Aquarium Director Jay Barnes stayed at the aquarium during Bonnie and gave an after-the-fact report to the staff. Fortunately, the facility suffered no damage during the storm, and only scattered limbs were tossed about the property. There were also a couple of minor roof leaks. No large trees fell near the l^cility. Most vulnerable trees had either been taken by Bertha and Fran, or cut last winter after suffering pine beetle damage. Power was lost at approximately 2:30 a.m. Thursday, August 27, and restored at about eight o'clock that night. The Aquarium's back-up generator ran flawlessly during the storm, providing power to water pumps and air systems, which kept all aquarium tanks operational. Numerous trees were downed on the two nature trails and both trails had to be closed until debris could be cleared. The WTTN-TV weather station on the Aquarium roof recorded a storm total of 12.73 inches of rain with a 24-hour maximum of 10.67 inches. The barometric low was 29.08 inches, recorded at approximately 3:00 a.m. August 27. Unfortunately the weather station's anemometer was improperly calibrated and peak winds could not be recorded; however, the Aquarium's second weather station, owned by WCn-TV, recorded gusts in the 80-90 mph range. The Aquarium's fall calendar has arrived, so join us for marsh walks, beach trips, Cape Lookout excursions, nautical craft classes and other exciting activities during these beautiful days of autumn. For a complete schedule, stop by the Aquarium and pick up a calendar, or call 247-4003.
