Page 2 The Shoreline July, 2000 Planning Board Topics of discussion included: 1. There was a brief discussion regarding signs, appearances and liglnting problems on commercial buildings. Community Appearance Commission Trees for People Trees Clean the air by absorbing carbon dioxide as well as dust, odors, and other pollutants. Trees produce oxvsen. Prevent water pollution bv holding soil in place and reducing runoff into bodies of water. Trees help recharge ground water and sustain stream flow. Resulate temperature. The canopy formed by trees acts as an umbrella by reflecting and absorbing the rays of the sun. Evaporated water from trees cools the air. Shield our homes from storms. These are only a few of the reasons that the Community Appearance Commission holds as our mission, doing all that we can to maintain the integrity of our maritime forest. Please help us! Submitted by: Bob Curry, Jr., Chairman Board of Adjustment The Board of Adjustment met on |vjay 16 to consider a request for a variance by Mark Hannula. Mr. Hannula build the house at 262 Salter Path Road. The house failed to meet the height restrictions set forth in the Town Code of Ordinances. The Board denied the variance by a vote of 4 to 1. There are other options available to correct the problem. Let's make it a neighborhood project... A safety hazard has been brought to our attention, which can be easily corrected with your assistance. The problem occurs when loose dirt, sand or marl washes from a driveway or property onto the right of way. The loose debris poses a threat of accident and/or possible injury to our residents who walk or ride bicycles on the right of way, especially on Hwy 58. Please check periodically and remove from the right of way any debris that may have come from your property. Please do this as a courtesy to your friends and neighbors and prevent any unforeseen problems. Thank you, your cooperation and assistance is greatly appreciated by all! Ei^S Squad #65 Summer is here and the warm weather is great. Unfortunately the warm weather also increases the incidence of insect bites and stings, and nasty encounters with sea life. Insect stings and bites; the most serious problem which can develop is anaphylactic shock. This takes place when your body reacts to counter the toxins, which have been injected, It can be life threatening and should be considered an emergency. If you have Benadryl handy you should take it whether or not a reaction is present. Apply a cold pack to the sting site. Several over the counter creams or lotions are available to relieve the pain and itching at the site. Keep the extremity below heart level. If numbness, extreme swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing develops call 911. If you have a prescription epi pen follow your physicians orders for use. Note: make sure your epi pen or bee sting kit has not expired. Remember fire ant bites can be very dangerous. Sea life; stings from jellyfish while extremely painful are easily handled by rinsing the area with full strength vinegar or isopropyl alcohol. After one of the above agents has been used any remaining stingers can be easily removed by applying a liberal coating of shaving cream and shaving them off with a tongue blade or razor. Lacerations from the barbs of stingrays are common and very painful. Additionally the risk of infection is high. Soak the area in a solution of alcohol or vinegar and hot water. The area can also be wrapped in wet very hot towels. This will relieve the pain but you will need to seek medical attention to have the wound cleaned and you should get a tetanus shot. Squad 65 responded to 14 medical emergencies, 2 transports and 1 fire call. Submitted by: Maureen Danehy Quick Wit- One fireman to another- "Did you hear that the new fireman's wife just had twins?" "They named one Jose" " and the other Hose B."
