Page 2 The Shoreline September, 2001 Community Appearance Commission As a continuum to last month's article re: David Nash, Brunswick County Extension Agent, who has masterminded the Master Dune Conservation Program in Brunswick, and who is a doctoral candidate in N.C. State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. I have had the opportunity to talk with him; and he has agreed to be present at our October meeting while in the area for a seminar. I am pleased beyond measure at this opportunity for the Community Appearance Commission; and as a result of that commitment, we would like everyone in Pine Knoll Shores who is interested in frontal dune management to come and share his expertise. We invite all interested citizens of Pine Knoll Shores to be present at our meeting at 9:00 a.m. on October 17 to meet and to hear Countv Agricultural Extension Agent David Nash. Bob Curry, Jr., Chair Planning Board The Planning Board approved a request to combine the southern portion of Lot 13 at 195 Oakleaf Drive with Lot 8 at 131 Cedar Road. The Planning Board recommended rezoning Lot 8 to a R2 zoning district to allow consistency with Pine Knoll Shores zoning. The combination and rezoning will be fonA/arded to the Board of Commissioners for their consideration. The Planning Board gave a conditional approval for the Pine Knoll Shores, Hotel, FMB Inc. site plan. The proposed Hotel site is located between the Windjammer Inn and the Sheraton. The site plan will be forwarded to the Board of Commissioners for their consideration. ^ O'* Squad #65 This month's report is a sad one to write. Four of our members tendered their resignations effective July 31, 2001. Our Chief, Andy Smetana, and his wife Marilyn have resigned owing to increased demands from other volunteer services. Saying they will be missed is an understatement. Andy served as Squad #65's chief with great distinction giving a calm and reasoned voice in the midst of much change and readjustment. Both Andy and Marilyn were the ultimate compassionate professionals at the scene of many emergencies. Our other two losses are Norm and Kathy Trommer. After 10 years of devoted service to the Town and the squad, the Trommers have decided to enjoy retirement and travel at long last. Norm was the sage and quiet voice at many a hectic scene. Kathy was an excellent EMT and the record keeper without peer - she kept tract of our many required hours of training making sure that we all met our certification mandates. On a happier note we are glad to welcome Judy Salchow anc^^ Tom Martynowski, who by the way is also a volunteer on thj^^ PKS Fire Department. These two additions help to keep the squad alive but more are needed. Please consider volunteering your time. You may contact the Town Hall if you wish to be trained, and to join a great bunch of people and to help your friends and neighbors. Squad #65 is fortunate to have Ted Lindblad again volunteer to be our Chief. Despite the losses, be assured that your 911 call will be handled with dispatch and the highest dedication. HEALTH NOTE: Drink for your health, not your waist. Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. In July, Squad 65 responded to 16 medical calls, and 3 fire calls. Active duty hours: 1,131, with 94 off duty hours extra, and 49 hours in training.
