The totals for the December campaign are as follows: We had 2456 checkpoints in North Carolina, 2411 DWIs, 996 drug arrests, 54 firearm violations, recovered 49 stolen vehicles, arrested 12 fugitives in addition to other charges for a total of 55611 traffic and criminal violations! It was a busy and successful campaign in our state. We have had a report and have obtained warrants for an individual for fraud and obtaining property under false pretense. This individual was going to provide air conditioning service for a couple and they paid him money up front. The individual never showed up to complete the work. We were fortunate that our investigation led us to this individual so we obtained felony warrants on him. It does not mean these people will ever recoup their money. PLEASE, check the individual's credentials or check with the Better Business Bureau to ensure you have a reputable worker. You should also be very cautious in giving money to an individual before the work has been completed. You should check to ensure that this person is licensed to provide the service he is offering too. Our MDT's (Mobile Data Terminals) should be in our patrol vehicles and in operation within the next couple of weeks. If you would like to see one the latest technical assets for our department please stop an officer you see on patrol or come by the department.^^ We will happily show you our newest addition. This^^ allows our officers quick access to pertinent information on vehicles and persons that we are checking. Congratulations to Officer Bill Pollock and his wife Deana on the birth of their son Devin on December 22, 2001. Devin's older sister Delaney is thrilled and a big help to mom I am told. Everyone is doing great, a little less sleep in the household, but happy and back at home. I would like to thank all of my well wishers for their thoughts and prayers during my adventure in December. On December 17, 2001 at 0730 in the morning after 7 days of climbing, my climbing team and I made the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa (almost 20000'). I will remember an awesome adventure for a lifetime. Chief M. M. Muhlig Squad #65 Little Know Health Hazards and Fallacies 1. Aluminum cooking pans should be thrown out if corroded or marked with pits surrounded by white deposits. New evidence indicates that food cooked in corroded aluminum pans absorbs the metal. Possible results: Impaired kidney function, brain^M and nerve cell problems and behavioral^^ abnormalities. Source: New England Journal of Medicine. 2. Electric blankets are a hazard to people with occlusive arterial disease. Uncontrolled heat may lead to gangrene by increasing metabolism but not circulation. 3. Mascara hazard: Bacteria build up in open tubes of mascara leads to eye infections. Prevention: Discard all open containers of mascara after six months or less. 4. Use eye drops sparingly, especially commercial brands. Reason: They relieve redness by constricting blood vessels so eyes will look whiter. If used frequently, varicose veins can develop and eyes will become permanently reddened. 5. Rash after receiving penicillin is not always an allergic reaction. The rash is often a result of the illness. True Allergic Reactions: Hives, swelling in throat, joint pain, chest constriction. Source: The Harvard Medical School Health Letter. 6. Dark circles below the eyes are probably hereditary. There is no medical basis for the myth that fatigue and lack of sleep cause these dark areas. Source: Journal of the American Medical Association. Squad 65 responded to 12 medical emergencies with 1 transport. Submitted By: Maureen Danehy
