April, 2002 '■////_//// /// ///^' ////////// /.//// PKS Police Dept. In celebration of Child Passenger Safety Week, nationally certified technicians reinstalled hundreds of restraint devices to ensure safe transportation of children. The Ford l^otor Company donated 25,000 booster seats to North Carolina for use by low-income families who could not otherwise afford them. If anyone is interested in checking the installation of their car seats please contact the Pine Knoll Shores Police Department. Families can also call SAFE KIDS toll-free at 1-888-347-3737 to learn if you qualify for free seats. North Carolina law requires children up to age 5 to ride in a correctly installed safety seat, and all children up to age 16 to use an appropriate restraint device no matter where they sit in the vehicle. Drivers who allow children to ride unrestrained face getting two penalty points on their driver's license. The police will make no exception for occupant violations-especially when they involve children. So often I report on our police arresting persons for various felonies (drugs, rape, arson, larcenies, etc.) which is certainly a part of our job. I do want to report that we have a "softer" side too. We provide welfare checks for individuals in our community that live alone and simply want someone to stop by and visit a few minutes. Of course, we provide house checks for you while you are out of town too. We do care about everyone's welfare in this community. In light of that statement, on Tuesday, February 26, 2002 one of our officers helped save a member of the community (a four legged member). Lieutenant Ethan Hazard and Sergeant Tyron Mann responded to the frantic call for help at a house on Pine Knoll Circle. They found a 19-year-old dog drowning in the pond behind the home of the resident. Lieutenant Hazard entered the freezing water and swam to the rescue of the beloved dog (the dog is nearly blind and deaf he later learned). The kind thank- you letter we received from the owner of the pet best describes the men of this police department. It states "the professionalism combined with the compassionate caring of both officers reflects greatly on the superiority of the Pine Knoll Shores Police Department." I want to commend Lieutenant Hazard, Culpepper, and the entire department for the efficient manner in which they handled the operation of the police department during my recovery from a serious motor vehicle accident. I received nothing but praise for the day-to- day operation of the department during my absence. Thanks guys! /fj f • » f » 9 Wf f W ' ^ J ^ J ^ ^ Jt J MV—’-» « V D- -|C3 Q I would also like to commend Sergeant Tyron Mann fo^^ receiving the MADD Award for his drunk/drugged driver's arrests.
