Page 5 The Shoreline wmmmmmmmam April, 2002 PKS Fire Department The department responded to two fire calls in February - an alarm activation and a mutual aid call to Atlantic Beach. There were no injuries or damages. Lightweight air cylinders have replaced the heavy metal air cylinders previously used on our self-contained breathing apparatus. It is now much easier for firemen to don the SCBAs and maneuver with this piece of equipment on their backs and is an improvement that is greatly appreciated by an aging firefighting force. Two home fire safety surveys were conducted in February at the request of homeowners. Fire safety information was passed on to the homeowners and some potentially hazardous conditions were corrected. If you would like a safety survey of your home, please contact Fire Chief Donald Melby. Prevention is your best protection from fire. Two firefighters achieved significant milestones in firefighting training. Norm Beattie completed the requirements to be state certified as Firefighter I. Gene Sagmiller completed the requirements for both Firefighter I and II certification. Gene, who was recognized in December as Firefighter of the Year 2001, \as become a Firefighter II faster than anyone previously in the department. Congratulations to both Gene and Norm for their significant achievements. Congratulations also goes out to Dan Ericksen for achievement of 10 years of service with the Pine Knoll Shores Fire Department. What would you do if you were awakened during the middle of the night by a smoke alarm located in another room in your home? The first thing you should do is gather yourself and calmly proceed with caution. If your bedroom door is closed, with the back of your hand feel the door knob and around the sides and top of the door to see if the door is hot. If it is hot, use a different route to exit your bedroom and the house. You should have a plan for at least two exits from every room in your home. If the door is cool, open it slowly. You may have to slam it shut if smoke or fire come rushing at you and then proceed to your alternate exit. If there is no such problem and the next room or hallway is clear, proceed to the nearest exit from your house. If you must pass through other doors in the process of exiting your house, check each of them for heat before proceeding. After you pass through a door, close the door again to prevent fire or smoke from spreading. There may be ^ome smoke but no fire between you and the exit. ^Pecause smoke rises, crouch or crawl close to the floor taking short breaths through your nose. A damp cloth or garment over your mouth and nose will greatly reduce any smoke inhalation. Once you are outside, go to your /////////////////////////////////////////////////m//////M Safe Meeting Place so you can account for any other occupants of your home. One member of the family should go to a neighbor's home so the fire can be reported by dialing 911. Do not ao back into the burning building under any circumstances. Wait for the fire department to arrive to search for any unaccounted for occupants and to control the fire.
