Town of Pine Knoll Shores: Bulletin Board #2 Page 2 of 3 trips and classes require fees and advance registration, so don't wait too late. Classes and field trips fill quickly and early registration is advised. Be sure and stop in this summer and see the Aquarium's newest exhibit, "Lionfish - Mysterious Travelers," located in the main viewing gallery. These beautiful but venomous fish are showcased in a specially-designed 1,200-gallon cylindrical tank, measuring eight feet in diameter. This gives visitors an exciting in-the-round view of these vibrantly colored sea creatures. Lionfish are native to the tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific oceans, but, surprisingly, were discovered in our waters in August of 2000. Their appearance made national news and continues to fascinate the science community. In their home range, lionfish prefer rocky coral habitats. Here, they have been sighted most often in and around shipwrecks 18 to 40 miles offshore at depths of more than 100 feet. Their new home at the Aquarium features re-created wreck debris made from fiberglass and other non-corrosive materials. The Aquarium has no plans to collect live lionfish from local waters, and specimens on display were obtained from professional collectors. Great care will be required to manage these venomous fish. Husbandry Curator Stuart May and Aquarist Bob Jones have had past experience with lionfish, and Curator May managed a lionfish exhibit at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. For a complete list of summer activities, stop by the Aquarium and pick up a calendar, or call 247-4003 to request a calendar by mail. The Aquarium's calendar of events and information about the new lionfish exhibit is also on its web site, www.ncaquariums.com. ■I PKS Garden Club No article submitted. a PKS Women's Club No article submitted.
