Commissioner White served from December 1983 - May 1989 and served again from December 1995 - August 2002. Commissioner White served the Town well and will be greatly missed. • Resolution passed in connection with Town officials filing an application with the Local Government Commission for approval of the extension of the period from seven years to ten years during which ($4,000,000 water) bonds and bond anticipation notes may be issued. There will be a public hearing on Tuesday, September 10th, at 7:00 p.m. at Town Hall. • Resolution passed requesting funding from the Division of Coastal Management to assist with providing bathroom facilities and drainage for the parking lot at the Iron Steamer Public Beach Access. * Paving will begin on Loblolly on August 19th barring any unforeseen problems. • The Planning Board found that roads in PKS fall under state law as well as local law, therefore the Planning Board decided not to recommend any changes in the right of way parking ordinance. The Planning Board did recommend that the parking regulations be published and that no plantings or structures be on the 6' space along side roads so parking would be less of a problem. • Canal front properties that are not bulkheaded in compliance with the town ordinance have one-year left of the three-years allotted time to come into compliance. • The Community Appearance Commission found that some of the funds set aside for beach maintenance could be used to purchase plants for the beach access area. NEST NEWS - UPDATE 1 The second of our Loggerhead turtle nests hatched on Thursday, August 15! At 10:50 p.m., we had a boil of 92 healthy hatchlings! No others emerged during the next two days. On Sunday, August 18, Nest #2 was excavated. There were 10 live healthy hatchlings found. Eight of these are going to a temporary new home at the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium. The other two were placed on the beach to make their walk to the ocean, to the delight of many spectators! Also found in the nest were 105 eggshells and 9 unhatched eggs. No dead hatchlings were found. Nest #2 had a fabulous 89.5% success rate!! Many thanks to all our volunteers, and special thanks to Rich Dahmer, http://www.townofpks.com/bulletinboard__pm.asp 08/26/2002
