September 2004 The Shoreline Page 13 The committe for Art in Town Hall cast a last critical look at their handiwork after hanging a new group of paintings and photos by PKS residents. The new display in Town Hall went up in early August and will remain for several months. From left are: Janet Birkel, Florance Passino and Janie Prete. Art in Town Hall In order to keep our Art Exhibit interesting in the Town Hall we have cycled the paintings. Joining the local talent are four new artists: Virgil Lindgren with his lovely watercolor, Jane Lynch with award winning photographs, James Storholt with two spectacular inter pretations of local scenes and Barbara White with out standing oils. Our other artists contributed interesting new works so now we have an entirely new exhibit. We hope all Pine Knoll Shores residents will applaud and offer the artists their congratulations. The plan is to recycle the exhibit every three or four months. Anyone interested in joining our ranks please contact our Mayor Joan Lamson or Janet Birkel, Janie Prete or Floranne Passino. September is National Literacy Month By Chris Walters Weather you have resided in Pine Knoll Shores for awhile or are one of our newer neighbors, there are rewarding volunteer opportunities waiting for you with the Carteret Literacy Council. The council provides free one-on-one tutoring in reading, writing and arithmetic through the use of vol unteer tutors, and is celebrating twenty years of service to the community this fall. Learners can vary in age from a child struggling to keep up in school to an adult wanting to pass the GED exam or simply be able to read a story to a child or grandchild. Statistics show that 1 in 5 Carteret County residents reads at a second grade level or lower. We all benefit when everyone is able to feel good about them selves and the contribution they make to society.. Many Pine Knoll Shores residents are currently serv ing as tutors or have done so in the past. The council asks for a one-year commitment after completing tutor train ing. For further information on the September Tutor Train ing Course call CLC at 808-2020 There is no doubt that tutors are the heart and soul of the organization but the council also provides two programs to the county’s youngest residents: 1. The “Books To Babies” initiative ensures that every newbom at Carteret General Hospital goes home with a board book and information for the parents on the ftui4e ct ixt “PtHC 520 Pelican Dr. East $575,000 522 Pelican Dr. East $1,125,000 109 Egret Lake A-25 Fiddlers Walk $155,000 $360,000 mi $6 miUiM, M U Viia Shm U 2004! Children in Headstart classes are entertained by an imaginative group of “storytellers” and encouraged to take home a book from the special lending library that the council provides. TUTORING NOT YOUR FORTE? You guessed it, there are other ways to support the literacy council. For example, the third annual Business Spelling Bee is to be held on Wednesday, Oct. 27,2004 at 11:30 a.m. at Glad Tidings Church. Businesses are invited to enter a team of three spellers to compete in this event. The emcee is Skip Waters from WCTI TV Donations of door prizes are much appreciated. Also businesses or individuals may also buy a letter for the”ABC’s for Literacy” wall. Last year three residents of Pine Knoll Shores, Jane Ashland, Irene Beattie and Jeanne Mays formed a team and represented several local bookshops. They brought a group of supporters with them and all had a grand time. Tickets for the Bee are $ 10.00 and include a box lunch. This event is an opportunity for raising funds as well as providing an appropriate vehicle to publicize literacy issues. Please consider putting it on your calendar and if you would like more details call Chris or Gerry Walters at 240-2745.
