The second Habitat golf tournament home has just been completed in Morehead City. We all like to support great charities, but with Habitat we can show you the house and you can meet the new homeowners. They plan to be at the tournament this year. Most tournament support dollars come from $100 hole sponsors. They can be individuals. families, or small or large businesses. A hole sponsor receives a golf ball logo sign at the tee box, listing in the tournament brochure, and a holiday thank you note in the local newspaper. Sponsors can then display the golf ball sign in their business throughout the year. This year there are two new sponsorship levels. For a Tour Champion ($300), the 1S"" hole will display the sponsor’s banner and the sponsor receives two complimentary dinners at the tournament, plus the benefits of a hole .sponsor. The Player of the Year ($500) spon sorship reserves the first hole for the banner, plus 2 player entry fees ($ 120 value), as well as recognition on tournament day. These two sponsors will also receive a 5”x7” framed photo of themselves with their banner for their home or office. Water Rate Increase Possible By Bob Ruggiero Carolina Water Services, Inc, has filed an appli cation with the North Carolina Utilities Commis sion for authority to increase rates for water and sewer utility service in all of its service areas in North Carolina. The Base Facilities Charge for a residential single family residence is proposed to increase from $ 10.10 to $ 13.75, or 36% The Usage Charge per 1000 gallons of water is proposed to increase from $3.03 to S4.02, or 32.7%. If your water service is cut off by the utility for cause, or is disconnected at your request, the new charge is projected to be $83.05 as compared to the current rate of $27, or an increase of 206%. The public hearing for Pine Knoll Shores will be held on Thursday, October 7,2004 at 7:00pm.at Jacksonville City Hall in Jacksonville, NC. The Public Staff of the Public Utilities Com mission is authorized by statute to represent the consumers in proceedings before the Commis sion, as is the Attorney General authorized by Road Crossing Plan Under Review By Bill White PKS officials are discussing the need for a comprehensive plan to cover road crossing safety. Such a plan, according to a recently received report from the North Carolina Dept, of Transportation (DOT), is a prerequi site to any possibility of installing either a traffic light or painted crosswalk at the inter section of Salter Path Road and Mimosa Boulevard. The DOT’S requirement for such a plan came up as a result of a pedestrian and bicycle safety review the state agency conducted last Memorial Day weekend at the request of the town. Safety at the Mimosa Boulevard/Salter Path Road intersection concerns many PKS resi dents who have to traverse the intersection while going to and from Ocean Park on Dog wood Circle across Salter Path road from Mimosa. The town asked DOT to take another look at the question after rumors circulated that a survey of pedestrian, bicycle and motor ve hicle traffic was conducted off-season when traffic is light. After conducting the three-day Memorial weekend survey, when traffic is normally heavy, the DOT concluded that the volume of pedestrian and bicycle traffic did not warrant installation of a traffic light or painted cross walk. The DOT report went on to note that any consideration of safety features would have to be based on a comprehensive plan that takes non-motorized traffic into account. The Memorial weekend survey was con ducted with checkpoints at both the Mimosa/ Dogwood intersection and at the Ramada Inn. The results of the volume checks are set forth in the accompanying chart. Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Review by the NC Dept, of Transportation Memorial Day weekend May 29-31, 2004 from 7;a.m. to 7 p.m. Motor Vehicle Intersection Volumes statute to represent the consumers in the proceed ings. Due to the fact that publication and distribution date for the Shoreline is October 6, 2004, this information may arrive too late to respond to this outrageous increase. An escalation of charges from 32%to 36% can hardly be condoned in light of the fact that the the annual inflation and con sumer price index hovers between 2-3% The administration is obviously distressed by the magnitude of the increase and the hope is that all of the Homeowner Associations will send a representative to the October 7 meeting to assist in mitigating the increase. In the meantime the Town is actively negotiating with the Carolina Water Company on the purchase of the water system. At this writing there has been no agreement in either the price of the system or any conditions on the proposed purchase agreement. The other option for the town is to construct a parallel system.
