Page 2 The Shoreline December 2004 Report on First Months of Enhanced EMS Service Town to Offer Classes in CPR The Town of Pine Knoll Shores in its ef forts to provide our citizens with the best in services, announces that it will be offering CPR classes at the Public Safety Building. Two types of classes are available to suit the different needs of those wanting to learn CPR. CPR for Family and Friends will teach CPR for adults without a certification card at the end of the class. This is a great class to take to insure that you can help your family or friends. This class lasts for about two hours and will cost each participant about $3. Adult CPR will issue a certification card good for two years for those who need the certification for their employment. This class will last about three to three and a half hours and total costs for the books, supplies and card will be about $10.50. A town employee who is an American Heart Association in structor will teach the classes. Please call the Fire/EMS number (247- 2268) and speak with Teddy so we can find out how many are interested in the different classes and then we can set the dates for the class. Police Report By Chief Culpepper The Pine Knoll Shores Police Department responded to 127 calls for service during October. These included one accident, 15 Fire/EMS assists, 11 motorist assists, 5 town ordinance violations and 20 well-being checks. Also reported were two cases of breaking and entering, four cases of larceny and one damage to property. Two businesses and four residences were found unsecured. Town Seeks New EMS Director The Town of Pine Knoll Shores is prepar ing to advertise widely as well as look locally for a new director of fire and emergency medical services. Mayor Joan Lamson said the job description for the position is being reworked to make it more specific. The position became vacant early in No vember with the resignation of Donald Melby, who had served for four years as the town’s first paid fire and EMS director. Since Melby’s departure the department has been operating under the direction of Asst. Chief Bruce Flynt with help from Capt. Dave Gildner and Fire/ EMT Training Officer Art Taylor. By Bruce Flynt, Asst. Fire Chief and Art Taylor, FirelEMTI Training Officer Here is an update on the EMS and MEDIC 3 service that we have enjoyed since Aug. 1, 2004. Since arriving at the Pine Knoll Shores Public Safety Building, MEDIC 3 has re sponded to every medical call in PKS. The three individuals who make up our MEDIC 3 crew are Senior Paramedic Scott Keroack, Paramedic Randy Schaffer and Paramedic Murray Stroud. They provide 24-hour cover age for our district and Bogue Banks. Since Aug. 1, we have had 33 medical calls, with 21 requiring Advanced Life Support (ALS) intervention. The average response time has been 4 minutes and 31 seconds for these calls. On every call the EMTs and paramedics have worked together to provide the best care to all their patients. The Town of Pine Knoll Shores has many opportunities for volunteers to provide assis tance and guidance to our community. The Fire and EMS Department are always look ing for dedicated volunteers to provide emer gency services. These skills can help you in many other situations and can be life-saving if the need arose. Your abilities are only limited by your desire and to a minor extent your physical capabilities. Knowing your limi tations will determine what activity you might be best suited for. Your Fire and EMS Department members are to be commended and recognized for all they do. The town attempts to provide the best equipment and supplies to meet every Our EMTs and Medical Responders (MR) have always provided the EMT-Basic level of medical care. The addition of the paramed ics has increased the medical intervention capability available to the residents of Pine Knoll Shores, Salter Path, Indian Beach and if called upon, Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle. Their presence has also provided an in- house availability of medical refresher train ing as evidenced by the recent training Para medic Randy Schaffer provided in October. This training consisted of three eight-hour days attended by members of Pine Knoll Shores Fire and EMS, Salter Path Fire and Rescue and county paramedics. It has been a long wait, but the presence of these professionals has made it possible for all of our residents to feel confident in the availability of life-saving care offered by our EMS and Paramedic team. need. We also provide many benefits in ap preciation of the volunteer commitment and to insure the health and safety of these fine folks. Not only does the town recognize our emergency services team but state agencies also administer many protective incentives for volunteers and their families. The town has taken full advantage of the benefits avail able from state associations and volunteer insurance companies. We need more volunteers in our Fire and EMS Department. We will provide the train ing if you have the interest. Please call 247- 2268 and ask for information about our vol unteer program.
