Page 4 The Shoreline April 2005 Morehead City Mayor Resides in Historic Home Pine Knoll Shores Democrat Party Precinct Meeting Update The historic Wade-Jones House is located at 707 Fisher Street in MoreheadCity. It is on the north side of the railroad tracks in the settlement originally founded as Shepard’s Point. The locals later named the area “Conch’s Point” after the incorporation of Morehead City. The present owners, Jerry and Ruth Jones, bought this home in 1981. It is difficult to determine exactly when the house was constructed. Research has the house dating back to at least 1911. However Jerry’s grandmother, Elva Mae Jones, acknowledged that her parents, Walter D. and Susan Mary Jones, rented the property in 1904. A picture of Jerry’s father, Walter, is presently displayed in their dining room. The house has a long history as evidenced by the records of its many; owners. Linwood and Betty Wade purchased the house from Elijah P. and Etta Wade in 1928. Linwood had borrowed money to install a new roof and could not repay the loan, therefore forcing foreclosure in 1934. Dan D. and Rosa Bell purchased the house from ‘ ’Realty Purchase Corporation” in 1940, sold it to S.A. and Elizabeth Chalk in 1941 who then sold it to Marvin and Estella Hughes in 1942. The house received major renovations and expansion of the second floor in the 1940’s. The Hughes’ deeded it to their son Sammy and his wife Mary in 1968, and they then sold it to Gerald A. and Carolyn Jones in 1978. Gerald and Carolyn renovated the house for commercial use and operated “Tammy’s Daycare” in it until they sold it to their son Jerry and wife Ruth in 1981. As in anything worthwhile, Jerry and Ruth have performed many renovations, upgrades and restorations to the first story of this bungalow-style wood frame home over the years. They have been careful not to jeopardize the historic charisma of the home while adding modem conveniences. Walking through the home one will notice different eras of renovations and restorations, indications of years past. From the early 1900’s decor and furniture in the dining room and formal parlor, to the 1940’s bead board paneling on the upstairs walls and ceilings, to the modem kitchen and living room. Jerry is the mayor of Morehead City and a local businessman who owns and operates a construction and roofing company while Ruth is a registered nurse.
