May 2005 The Shoreline Page 17 Meet Your Neighbor - The Hamiltons By Marge Green Many of us when we came south entered into a new lifestyle. In effect we exchanged the daily grind for a more relaxed mode of existence. The other day I talked with an interesting couple who retired here but have also managed to keep one foot, so to speak, in their former lifestyle. They have retained their rustic summer cottage along a beautiful bay in Canada. Here they can indulge their passion for sailing a few months of the summer. I am speaking of Charlotte and Bob Hamilton of 129 Mimosa Boulevard. They lived in Niagara Falls for more than thirty years. Bob’s last job was with Washington Mills where he was an inorganic chemist. For the last eight years he was vice president for Research & Development. Washington Mills is the fumacing operation of the original Carborundum Company which made the grit for sandpaper and for sanding wheels. They never made sandpaper, but all of 3 M’s sandpapers are covered with their grit. The process requires changing bauxite, a mineral, into aluminum oxide and then subjecting it to high temperatures in an arc furnace. This converts it into a material which is finely ground into a grit. It is an intensive job requiring a lot of cheap electricity which the Falls at Niagara provided. Over the years the Carborundum Company went through many breakups and acquisitions until today only Washington Mills remains. I mention this in case some of you handy men need help with a sanding job. You now know the local expert. Charlotte and Bob met while both were in college at Lebanon Valley in Pennsylvania. He was originally from Pitman, N.J. while Charlotte is from Oak Ridge, Tennessee. She taught high school and college English while doing her graduate work-'*'‘*’~?*y; at the University of ^ Cincinnati. Her job before coming to Pine Knoll Shores was with a medical device company, AirSep, which produces oxygen concentrators. She was in their R & D department working on evaluation procedures required by the FDA. The documentation was very stringent, surpassed only by the Japanese who purchased some of their equipment. Initially the machines were too large to be mobile. Eventually the technology developed to such an extent that they could be used in the home. The Hamiltons have three children. The oldest, Amy, is a biochemistry professor at Iowa State. She met her husband, who is also a professor, there. He is from Buenos Aires. They have two lovely children, a boy and a girl. Their oldest boy, Andrew, is a mechanical engineer. He has what sounds to be a very interesting job. He works for the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute doing deep ocean research. He is not married. The youngest, Geoffrey, is a physician ^married to another physician. He is in ” internal medicine while she is in family practice. When two doctors marry they have a hard time juggling their schedules. Somehow they do manage and still find time to enjoy the love of their lives, their infant daughter. They live in Providence, R.I. As you can see Charlotte and Bob could not really find a place that would be close to all their children so they decided they wanted to retire near the coast. No more snow shoveling for them. Their quest for the right place took well over a year. They surveyed the coast from St. Augustine to northern Virginia. It seemed, though, they kept coming back to the Ramada and this area. They finally decided to concentrate their search. They sold the house where they had lived for 30 years and rented a condo on the beach. This allowed them to concentrate on our general area for six weeks of intensive study. The Dutchers had just put their house on the market and the Hamiltons, the first to look at it, bought it on the spot. The Hamiltons have been sailors nearly all their lives. They sailed a lot on Lake Ontario. Their hideaway cottage is on Georgian Bay, Canada, which feeds into Lake Huron. They are on the eastern side of the bay, just north of Toronto. They keep their boat in Canada as Bogue Sound is a little shallow after you are used to sailing on those great northern lakes. Bob is building a kayak so he can at least feel the water while he is here. Bob and Charlotte are very happy living in their own little forest on Mimosa Boulevard. They love the beach and all the friendly people they have met. Their one negative, and many of us share it, is the lack of a close airport since all their visits to the children usually require flying some distance. I am sure once you meet them you will find they are a welcome addition to our town.
