accomplished clinician, educator, administrator
and dental scientist.
From 1975 to 1979, he served on the Board
of Scientific Counselors to the National Institute
of Dental Research. He has published numerous
professional articles and has served as a mentor
for several dental educational programs. He is
a Diplomat of the American Board of
Periodontology and was a Fellow of the
American College of Dentists. He is a retired
member of the American Dental Association,
The American Academy of Periodontology, is
a lifetime member of the Army War College
Association and a member of the Association
of the United States Army. He is a lifetime
member of the Pierre Fouchard Academy. In
1981, he was awarded the “A” designator, the
Surgeon General’s highest award for
professional achievement.
In all of his pursuits his best friend, most
trusted aide and partner, Elaine, was at his side
every step of the way. If you want to make
Elaine’s eyes light up, mention herthree children
and seven grandchildren. (See photo to the
right with six. Their newest baby, Ella Rose is
in lower right inset). Their two sons are presently
following in the footsteps of their father as
dental surgeons and career military officers.
Their oldest, Thomas Robert, Jr. (Rob), is a
lieutenant colonel presently commanding a
dental unit in Iraq. He also is dental consultant
for all coalition dentists. He will be promoted to
full colonel in September. Next is Major Carl
Gardner Tempel who is Assistant Chief of Oral
and Maxillofacial Surgery at Walter Reed Army
Medical Center. He returned from a tour in
Afghanistan in March, 2003. He, too, is
scheduled for promotion to lieutenant colonel.
Their daughter, Kimberly Lynn Tempel
Boosinger is pursuing a career you don’t much
see these days - full time mother and
homemaker. The photo shows the entire family
assembled in Williamsburg for a reunion last
August.
As you might expect of a dental surgeon.
Tom is a superb carver and woodworker. His
pride is evident in his workshop that he calls,
“Cedar Knoll, Artistry in Wood.” When they
built their home, the property contained four
large, dead, weathered and twisted 179-year-
old cedar trees. As a lover of wood, Tom took
the dead trees to a saw mill where they were cut
to make a gorgeous fireplace mantel and many
cedar boards for future use. Where we mortals
see dead trees or driftwood, Tom sees
sanderlings, cormorants, ducks, butterflies,
wrens and dolphins.
Although active in the Carteret County
Arts and Crafts Coalition, one of Tom’s regrets
is that his whirlwind schedule leaves him little
time for his carvings these days but if you are
lucky enough to visit him, ask him to show you
some of his unbelievable artistry in wood. I
couldn’t believe the delicacy of the feathers he
so meticulously reproduced on his sea birds.
The same can be said of the flies he loves to
create for saltwater fly fishing. Not only are
they beautiful to look at but the fish really go
for them. What are his favorites? Tom will
proudly point to the oak and dogwood altar
crosses he was inspired to make for All Saints
Episcopal Church in Morehead City.
While Tom loves woodcarving and fly-
making, basically solitary pursuits, he never
forgets that most things in life are accomplished
by people working together. Knowing the value
of teamwork, he says, makes a good leader, a
position he has found himself in in most of his
endeavors.
Tom sums up his philosophy of leadership
in two sentences; “A good leader knows the
mission and accomplishes all objectives by
bringing out the very best in each member of
the team. The focus is on the team effort, not the
chain of command above.”
The teams Tom and Elaine have led over
the years have accomplished great things.
