July 2005 The Shoreline Page 15 Commerce Report Pine Knoll Shores sets the pace! By Mike Wagoner, President Carteret County Chamber of Commerce The Carteret County Chamber of Commerce expresses gratitude to The Shoreline for granting us this space to talk about the business of doing business in Pine Knoll Shores and Carteret County. Let’s begin with a note of admiration to the Town of Pine Knoll Shores for its designation as a “Tree City, USA” for the fifth consecutive year. You are the only municipality in Carteret County to be participating in this important program. The Chamber continues to hold up Pine Knoll Shores as the “best practices” model that will hopefully inspire neighboring towns to replicate. Building “green capital” is a legitimate economic development strategy that we need more of here in Carteret County. Programs that preserve and/or conserve the open space, forests and greenways, wildlife habitats and historical sites are the ideal to attract those who embrace the entrepreneurial spirit. The advice from the professionals is to “continue to work together to build your area as an attractive, socially friendly, economically viable and environmentally sensitive community. If so, the business will come.” To our guests, we say, “Get ready to relax from the frantic pace of elsewhere.” You can kick back and enjoy all the fun at the Chamber’s Reverse Drawing on Saturday evening, July 23, at the Crystal Coast Civic Center in Morehead City. Tickets are $ 100 each and admit two for unlimited food, drinks and dancing. Most importantly, if your ticket is the last one drawn, you win $ 10,000 cash. Last year’s winners were Jere and Phyllis Brehm of 277 Salter Path Road, Pine Knoll Shores. You should be so lucky! The Chamber is “Open for Business...and At Your Service.” We are located at 801 Arendell St. in Morehead City. If you have questions, call 726-6350 or send an e-mail message to mike@nccoastchamber.com. “The Garden Gate Cafe” If the key to success is doing what you love, the folks at the Garden Gate Cafe and Deli have found it. “Everyone always loved my mom’s cooking,” said Travis Williams, who works with his mother Kandy in the family-business. “Raising three boys and a husband, she sure has a lot of experience in the kitchen.” According to Travis, one of her finest qualities is her ability to make everything special and exciting. “I’d say she puts the same love in all of the food she prepares for our customers as she did for us at home.” he said. Travis said the Garden Gate Cafe and Deli’s mouthwatering crab cakes and its chicken and shrimp salads are among the customer’s all-time favorites. Lunch at the Garden Gate also offers gourmet Boar’s Head sandwiches on all types of bread, with all types of spreads. They even offer a boxed lunch, perfect for a day out on the boat. The boxed lunch includes a sandwich, chips and a cookie. They also offer fresh deli salads and meats sold by the pound. “We like to think of the Kandy Williams, left, with her staff, Travis, Alecia, Junior, Kristen and Wayne food we serve as a healthy alternative to fast food,’’Travis said. And what’s for dessert? How about a nice piece of ebony and ivory cake, or maybe a slice of Kandy’s homemade carrot cake? T ravis insists his mother makes some of the best chocolate chip brownies, giant oatmeal cookies and cranberry cookies to be found in Carteret County. The staff at the Garden Gate Cafe, who all consider themselves part of the William’s family, are waiting for an opportunity to serve you breakfast or lunch in an atmosphere reminiscent of a peaceful garden. u Lynette Dudley Window WallOJInterior oCE)&or Your windows.
