Page 2 The Shoreline August 2005 During June the Police Department responded to 145 calls for service including five accidents, five motorist assists, 27 Town ordinance violations, 48 well-being checks, six alarms and found five open doors. Also, 65 citations were issued involving 78 charges, including seven driving while impaired, 11 speeding, 13 seatbelt violations, two drug and ten alcohol violations. The Streaker has returned! Take your cell phone to the beach and call the police at 247-2474 or if sighting is after hours or on the weekend, 504-4800. As with last month, we continue to have 15 reported vehicle break-ins with one arrest and more charges pending. We continue to work on these cases but until they are solved, residents are reminded to ensure that they remove any valuables from their vehicles before leaving them unattended, especially during the nighttime hours. Also, all residents Post Office Tests Extended Hours Saturday hours at the Atlantic Beach Post Office have been extended an hour in a move aimed at giving Bogue Banks residents and visitors more convenient access to postal services. As of July 9, the Post Office on Fort Macon Road (Route58) began keeping its retail counter open until 1 p.m. Saturdays instead of closing as usual at 12 o’clock noon. Postmaster Dominick L. Spadaro said the extended Saturday hours will be offered on a trial basis for two months. If the response warrants it, the extra hour could be retained for a longer period. The extra Saturday hour will be in effect throughout August. Revegetating the Beach By Bob Curry Jr., Chairman, Community Appearance Committee The CAC, with the help of Chris Jones, Bill Brophy and Bob Kihl Strom, had a great time planting sea oats on our beaches May 23 through 31. Steve Mercer of Bolivia, N.C. had collected sea oat seed heads from PKS last summer and raised numerous plants for use in PKS at both private and public sites. The CAC set approximately 1000 plants. Further information on sea oats and their availability may be obtained by calling Mercer at 1-800-331 -7409. The accompanying picture shows some of our members working at the Iron Steamer site. Police Report Submitted by Chief Joey Culpepper who do find their vehicle has been opened and searched, are reminded to call the Police Department immediately. Don’t think that just because they didn’t take anything we don’t need to know about it. Valuable information may be gained from your vehicle which may assist us in finding the criminals who are committing these crimes. Also any resident who is missing a yard ornament should contact the police department to recover it. Those taken by vandals recently have been collected and are at the EMS Building. Residents are reminded to be aware of the Handicapped and EMS designated parking at the beach accesses. People who are not handicapped and do not have proper vehicle tags should not park, even temporarily, in these spaces. As in past summers, we have people who are not handicapped parking in these spaces to go to the beach. They will receive citations and may be towed. Residents are asked to pass this on to any visiting family members or guests to prevent anyone having a bad vacation to PKS. The Police Dept, along with the Fire/EMS and the CERTt team, is trying to compile a list of citizens with special needs in the event of a hurricane. In the past, request forms were sent to residents to gain the same information. We need to know if any person does not plan to evacuate in the event of hurricane but has limited mobility and requires some type of special medical care like in-home oxygen. We would like to have this information so immediately after, or in some cases before and during, the storm these citizens would be checked on to insure their safety and that their medical needs are taken care of If anyone is in this group or anyone has a neighbor who may be, please contact the Police, Fire/EMS or CERT member for information. Fire & EMS Report By Bill Mathias The department responded to 29 incidents during the month of June; 19 EMS calls and 10 fire calls. The average response time for EMS calls was 3:44 minutes and for fire calls was 3:24 minutes for an overall average of 3:38 minutes. Training in June included classes in pre-planning town structures and water rescue.
