The
New Emergency
Personnel Add
Depth, Experience
There are several new faces at the Town’s
Public Safety Building, including those of
three new firefighters and emergency medical
technicians added to the staff in the past month.
In addition, a parttime firefighter and EMT has
been advanced to fulltime status and a new
office assistant has joined the team.
The new additions give the Town greatly
increased capability to respond to public
safety situations around the clock with trained
personnel drawing on years of experience
in a wide variety of disciplines, as required
by increasingly stringent state mandated
standards.
Moving up from parttime to fulltime status
is Capt. Buddy Tweed, who joined the PKS
department four months ago. Tweed, a
firefighter since 1997, comes from Ashville
and was a captain with the Reynolds Fire

Another new presence at the Public
Safety Building is that of Molly,
a Dalmatian rescued from a kill
shelter in Fayetteville by EMS
Director Matthias. Molly, who lives
with the Matthias family, possesses
a wonderful demeanor and, when
at work, has slipped quickly into
her traditional role as a fire dog.
Matthias says she insures that he is
always working by following him
everywhere he goes. She is anxiously
waiting to welcome children and
other tour groups.
Deadline for October issue is
Actually, we’re looking for a few people who
have an hour or so now and again to help The
Shoreline editorial staff put together the T own
newsletter, which is published monthly.
You don’ t have to be a Hemingway, although
that would certainly be a bonus, but it would
be helpful if you like to write and take pride
in putting the facts of a situation together on
paper in a manner that proves interesting and
informative to the reader.
That's not the only help we are seeking.
There is also a need for computer literate
people who can prepare our copy and receive
and send material electronically.
The need for additional help arises from
the nature of the lifestyle most Pine Knoll
Shores residents pursue. We’re basically
retired types who are always on the go, leaving
town frequently to travel, to honor a family
commitment, or for other good reasons. The
present editorial staff has done pretty well over
the past year keeping up when one or more of
us are away. But we’re often stretched pretty
thin. Knowing that there are additional helpers
standing by when the need arises would be
helpful.
There's a lot of talent in Pine Knoll Shores,
and we hope those of you with a I iterary bent or
with a long-held desire to be a newshawk will
give serious thought to pitching in and giving
us a hand. We hope you'll give us a call.

5 Vying for 3
Seats on PKS
Town Board
Mayor Unopposed
For Reelection
Five candidates have filed to compete
for the three seats on the Town’s Board of
Commissioners that will be filled at the Nov.
8 municipal election.
On the mayoral side of the ledger. Mayor
Joan Lamson is the only one who has filed
to place her name on the ballot. Lamson has
served as mayor for two years, winning the
seat in 2003 as the first mayor to be directly
elected by the voters. She is seeking a second
two-year term.
Prior to 2003 the town commissioners
annually chose one of their number to serve
as mayor. The Town Charter was changed in
2001 to switch to a form of government that
provided for election of a mayor directly by
the voters.
Of the five candidates for commissioner,
Larry La Brie, a retired attorney, is the only
incumbent. He was appointed to the board two
years ago to fill the unexpired term of former
Mayor Robert Gallo, who resigned.
Joining La Brie in the commission race
are Robert Kihlstrom, a retired engineer; Jay
Kocher, president of Pine Knoll Homeowners
Assn.; Ted Lindblad, a retired engineer and
a former president of Bogue Banks Country
Club, and Bonnie Jean (BJ) Peter, an
attorney and former business law educator.
Commissioners are elected for four-year
terms. Biographical sketches of the candidates
follow.
In addition to La Brie’s seat on the Town
Board, the other two to be contested in the
non-partisan Nov. 8 municipal election are
currently held by Mary Kanyha and Jim
