Firemen, Volunteers Team Up To Right Victim of Nor'easter By Charlie McBriarty The PKS Fire Department was experiencing a quiet day on Wednesday, Nov. 22. The calm was appreciated after the previous day's nor'easter that had included nasty winds and heavier than usual rain. However, on that calm pre- Thanksgiving day a couple of "out-of-the- norm" calls were received. An early morning call requesting a pump to empty water from a boat could not be responded to since the department had no suitable pump among its equipment. Somewhat latter that morning there was another call, from Commissioner Vince Larson. That call was a request that Chief Bill Matthias go to Hall Haven Marina to determine if the PKSFD could do something about a capsized boat. When the chief arrived he found a boat that had taken on a great deal of water during the previous day's nor'easter and was in trouble. The boat was half submerged and resting on its side in the mud. The chief asked a group of neighbors who had gathered to watch the operation if they had any suggestions. Several pointed to Henry Bannen as a "man with a plan." The chief consulted with Barmen and then radioed for back-up.
