3 Memorial Tree
Plantings Planned
For Arbor Day
Arbor Day, which will be observed
on March 16, will be a particularly
meaningful event in Pine ^oll Shores
this year. It will be marked by dedication
of three memorial trees at two separate
ceremonies, and by taking note that 2006
was the seventh year in a row our town
has been designated as a Tree City USA by
the National Arbor Day Foundation.
The first ceremony will be held at 10
a.m. at Mimosa Blvd. and Salter Path Rd.,
where the PKS Garden Club will plant
trees in memory of two recently deceased
members, Joan Bone and Kit Fredman. An
hour later the Community Appearance
Commission led by Bob Curry, chairman,
will gather at town hall to also recognize
Kit Fredman's contributions to keeping
our town beautiful by caring for growing
things.

This map plots the progress of the Section 933 beach nourishment project underway in PKS. It is current as of Feb. 22 and will
have been updated by the time you read this. By Feb. 22 nourishment had been completed in the areas shown in red. Two dredges
are piping sand ashore, working westward along the beach. At this writing the discharge pipe was just west of the Iron Steamer
Beach Access site, noted in purple. An elbow on the end of the pipe is used to direct the discharged sand, first to the west and then
to the east. The next two discharge locations will be near Memorial Park and finally near the Sheraton. The progress map may
be accessed online at www.protectthebeach.com. Click on the 933 Project box. Phase II Construction Update, View Graphic.
Wheels and Feet Share the Street
By Bill White
With spring hopefully just around the
corner, lots of us are tuning up the bicycles
and breaking out the walking shoes to
take advantage of warming weather and
engage in a little beneficial exercise and
relaxation. It's also time to do a little
thinking about how to safely go about
enjoying these outdoor pursuits.
Pine Knoll Shores does not have any
sidewalks to speak of. This means that
bicyclists and walkers have to share the
town's roadways with motor vehicles.
When all of these users have to share
the roads, common sense should be
their guide. Consider the fact that motor
vehicles weigh in by the ton, while
pedestrians and bicycles and their riders
tip the scales in pounds.
Like the 800 pound gorilla, which pretty
much sits where it pleases, motor vehicles
are the top dogs on the roads, with size and
speed on their side. Arguing with them
about the right-of-way does not make
good sense when it comes to walkers and
bicycle riders. Pedestrians are a lot more
agile than motor vehicles. It's a lot easier
for them to step aside rather than risk a
confrontation. By the same token, it's a lot
easier for bicyclists than motor vehicles

Be Considerate - Staffers from The Shoreline graphically illustrate the many types
of users of town streets. The size, weight, speed and mobility differentials between
motor vehicles and their drivers, bicyclists, walkers and, yes, pets, make it essential
that they all be conscious of the presence of the others and keep a wary, considerate
eye out so that they all safely interact.
