Crystal Coast
July Commissioners Meeting
By Yvette Bannen
The meeting started with some special
recognitions. Betty J. Carr was given an
outstanding administrative personnel
award by Lowell Gunther of the NC
Rural Water Association. Next was
a certificate of appreciation from the
town to Bruce Flynt in recognition
of his 14 years of service in the fire
department. See related information
in the Emergency Services report.
Then, the mayor proclaimed "Terri
Sweeney Day" and read a certificate of
appreciation for her work with beach
preservation, starting with PKS and later
with all of Bogue Banks. The mayor also
presented her with a bouquet of roses.
Pat McNeese, the conservation and
research coordinator at the aquarium,
spoke about her new position doing
conservation projects, both at the
aquarium and in the community.
The survey for the recreational
advisory committee has been distributed
in The Shoreline and it will be greatly
appreciated if citizens take the time
to complete and return it. The results
will be reviewed by the committee and
made public.
A resolution was approved to start
the process of getting in line for DOT
projects in order to have the Mimosa
Boulevard bridge replaced. The process
is lengthy but the bridge is safe in the
meantime.
It was noted that Bill Brophy has
"moved on" and the town is looking
for a replacement in the public works
department.
There was discussion at the morning
and afternoon sessions about the static
line of vegetation on the beach but no
decision was made. The community
appearance committee and the plarming
board are working together on policy
regarding the removal of unauthorized
trees.
