When landscaping, be aware of the damaging southwest wind that many trees and shrubs are not hardy enough to withstand. They can be protected by planting them where the southwest wind does not reach them, which is generally on the ocean side. The soil is very important as well. Sandy soil has low acidity (ph) and requires more frequent watering and fertilization. An updated copy of a booklet listing hardy trees and bushes for this area is available for review in the building inspector's office in town hall.
