January 2009 The Shoreline Page 5
December Commissioners Meeting
At the Library
By Yvette Bannen
During the public comment on current
agenda items, a citizen asked whether
there would be discussion regarding
public beach accesses and the reply was
that the subject was still in negotiations
in closed session.
There have been at least 400 calls for
fire and EMS so far this year. A year-end
report will be given next month. Also
a comparison of 2007 and 2008 police
reports will be given at that time.
During discussion about septic systems.
Commissioner Lindblad asked about the
recommended frequency for pumping
out septic systems and the response was
about every five years.
Comments were made about the road
patching and the fact that some of the
work was done while the temperature
was below 60 degrees.
Because there was confusion about
the house number ordinance, a revised
ordinance was passed and the new
deadline for compliance will be next April
30. See related story on page one.
There was a lengthy discussion on
widening the canal under the Mimosa
Blvd. bridge when it is replaced, and
as replacing the seawall. The cost of the
change will be the town's responsibility.
The board approved replacing the seawall
and widening the canal under the bridge
as much as is practical.
Appointments were made to the
recreational advisory committee and
JoAnn Shallcross was selected to be
chairperson again. Martha Edwards
and Joe Murphy were reappointed for
another term. Three new members were
approved: James Hunter, Betty Johnson
and Melissa Klor.
Commissioner Lindblad was
recommended for reappointed to the
Carteret County Beach Commission for
a two-year term.
There was discussion about the town's
EMT sevice level changing to the
intermediate level from the basic level.
Four of the EMT's are already trained.
The most common calls are for advanced
life support cardiac, respiratory and
diabetic problems. It was approved to
make application for the higher level of
service.
Bob Angle was appointed to the
community appearance committee to
serve the balance of a term that expires
next September.
The second BOC meeting in January
will be on the 22nd and discussion will
start on the budget for 2009-2010 as well
as capital improvements.

Sunday, January 11 will be an eventful day at Bogue
Banks Public Library on Salter Path Road in Pine Knoll
Shores. The Friends of the Library, the citizens group that
provides year-round support to the facility, will hold its
annual meeting beginning at 3 p.m.
The gathering, to which the public is invited, will be
highlighted by a talk by Kevin Duffus, an au thor, researcher
and documentary film maker who specializes in North
Carolina maritime history. He will discuss wartime events
off the Outer Banks during World War II. Duffus directed
a documentary movie that brought to life those eventful
days as remembered by those who lived through them.
The meeting will also feature election of officers and
presentation of the organization's budget for the coming
year. The Friends point out that the meeting will not only
be interesting but a good way for prospective members to
familiarize themselves with the group and its work. They
hope to see many of you there.
