E on events
R in town.
Here are a few of the things going on
at Town Hall.
Hurricane Preparation. It's that
time of the year again. Over the next
few weeks Fire Qiief & Emergency
Manager Bill Mathias and I will send
out public ii>formation messages on
my town-wide email. Radio 1610
AM, and The Shoreline. Please e-mail
me at manager@townofpks.com to
get on my distribution list for this
important information. We will pass
on information about evacuation and
reentry procedures, shelter locations
(to include pet sheltering), assistance
for those who need help and other
important things.
Diimer with the Town Manager and
Staff Department Heads. I will be at the
July 2009
ClamDigger Restaurant at 5:30 p.m. on
Saturday, July 18. The intent of these
meetings is to allow the citizens to meet
the Town staff and talk about issues
of the day. For this meeting all the
Department Heads (Police, Fire, Public
Service, Inspections and Finance) will
be present with me. We are having this
on a summer Saturday in order to target
our weekenders and second home folks.
I hope you can make it.
Ordinance change. At the June Board
of Commissioners meeting a new
ordinance was passed that requires
citizens to place household garbage
and yard debris piles in front of their
own homes (as opposed to a neighbor's
home).
Thanks to the surfers; beware the
riptide. This issue of The Shoreline
includes an extraordinary and heart
warming story of the rescue of a young
man by surfers here in PKS. Incredibly,
there was a second and equally
remarkable rescue near Hammer Park
(the east end of tovm) by others using
a surfboard. We have a skilled and
resoxirceful group of young citizens who
routinely (normally without fanfare nor
publicity) help out swimmers in trouble.
Please read the article and consider
how lucky we are to have such people
Meet Paul Ehrier
Editor'sNote: This is another in theseries
focused on town employees.
Paul Ehrier is a local. He was bom and
grew up in Beaufort. After graduating
from East Carteret in 1992, he began to
follow his dream to become a police
officer, and further education was
central to that ambition.
He eiu'oUed in Basic Law Enforcement
Trainingin 1994atCarteretCommimity
College, and the following year began
his law enforcement career in Emerald
Isle. In 2000, he moved to the Pine
Knoll Shores PoUce Department and
began working on a Bachelor's Degree
in the Administration of Criminal Justice
at Mountain State University. After
earning his Bachelor's Degree, he took a
position as Chief of Police in Whitakers,
N.C. in 2004 and finished his Master's
Degree in Administration of Criminal
Justice from Mountain State.
In 2005, he returned to Pine Knoll
Shores Police Department and has
continued to enjoy serving the town
ever since. As a second job, he is an
adjunct instructor in the Criminal
Justice Program at Carteret Commimity
College, where he began his law
enforcement education.
Paul and his wife of five years,
Michelle, have five children between
them: Jacoby, Ashlynn, Kayla, Hannah,
and AnaKay.

in our midst.
Mosquito Sprajdng. We are actively
spraying. Call Ernie Rudolph at 247-
4353, ext 27, to advise him of any
particular problem areas.
Pedestrian Planning (aka
"Sidewalks"). By the time you are
reading this we will have held a public
meeting on the plan that we are currently
working on. Ifyou have questions about
this or want to talk about any aspect of
sidewalks in PKS, please send me an
e-mail or call me at 247-4353, ext 16.
Oakleaf-lines on the road. We
received some calls of concern and have
repainted lines on the road at the curve
on Oakleaf.
Thanks, Bill White. It is said often
around PKS, but it bears repeating:
volunteers are what make this town
tick. When it comes to volunteering
time and energy, you cannot get much
better than Bill White. For those of
you who do not know Bill, he is the
person who has managed this paper
for the last 5 years. Bill has moved to
Charlotte and has turned over the reins
to Charlie McBriarty. The Shoreline is
read from Maine to New Zealand and
is a treasured part of the town. We all
owe Bill a hearty thanks.
Tribute to Bill

my interest in journalism. Without him, I
might have decided to quit years ago.
I remember a particularly memorable
assigrunent regarding the re-opening of
the PKS aquarium, way back in 2006.1
received a call from Mr. White, asking
me to report on it. With pen in hand, I
went to the grand re-opening. I didn't
expect to have my picture taken with the
Mayor! Or to get a media badge.
It was difficult to write this article. Not
because I didn't have plenty of things to
say, but because I didn't know precisely
how to say it. It's hard to express over
three year's worth of gratitude in one
article.
Thank you again, Mr. White. I am sure
I'm not the only one on the staff who will
miss you. Good luck on your all your
future endeavors.
Editors note: Cierra was 11 years old
when she submitted her first article to The
Shoreline.
