Memorial Tree. In March of this year a long-time resident and former member of the Community Appearance Commission (CAC), Gordon "Hoot" Gibson, died. In his memory a tree has been planted in one of the National forests thanks to the efforts of the CAC. The tree planting is a program of the Arbor Day Foundation. July Aquarium Special Events. The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores has scheduled a series of events during the month of July. All month there will be a special exhibit featuring Crimch, a 165 pound alligator snapping turtle measuring nearly four feet long. Two family nights are scheduled: on Thursday, July 16, it's "Banjos to Beach Music" and on Thursday, July 30 it will be "Sharks!" Both programs begin at 5 p.m. To end the month, "Shark Week" will feature a close-up look at the ocean's top predators. This program will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week beginning on Sunday, July 26. Photographs. Over the years The Shoreline has many photos of people, places and events. In spite of efforts to return them to their rightful owners, the number being accumulated seems to be growing. In an effort to solve this dilemma these photos have been collected and placed in a basket in town hall. If you have submitted a photo to the paper that has not been returned, please stop by town hall sometime this month to see if it is in the box. Lest We Forget. Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative (CCEC) members will soon be seeing rate increases. The most significant change members will see is in their basic charge. For residential consumers the basic charge will go from $12.50 to $20 per month. CCEC explained in its news brief to customers that the new rate structure is the result of a Cost of Service Study (COSS) that examined not only the cost of purchased power, but also the cost of materials, labor and capital. Craig Conrad, CCEC's CEO and General Manager said "As a member owned, non-profit organization, we work hard to minimize cost increases, but we have little control over energy markets and state and federal mandate as a member-owned cooperative we have no reason to generate a large profit..." In fact, Conrad explained, any money, earned above and beyond expenses (capital credits) is actually returned to members over a period of time. Scholarship Applications. Students attending Carteret or Craven Community College can earn up to $1,000 from the Carteret-Craven Electric Foundation to help them fund the cost of their education. To be eligible, applicants must receive their power from CCEC and be attending or plan to attend either of the two community colleges. The scholarships will be awarded based on need and merit. Applicants must write a letter detailing their educational goals and plans for the future, as well as any special needs or circumstances. Applications and more information are available at the financial aid offices of both community colleges as well as online at www.carteretcravenelectric. coop, or by calling 247-3107. Deadline for applications is 5 p.m. on July 15, 2009. Plans Proceeding - Slowly! By Tom Powers Ever wonder what will become of the barren groimd on the ocean side of Salter Path Road that was the site of the Best Westem/HoUday Inn? Well, developers, Jim Bailey and Doug Brady, have acquired this site along with the site of the former Jimgle Land in Atlantic Beach and wooded property that sits across from the old Best Western/Holiday Inn site. They envision a three phased plan to build on these properties. Even with the economy at a standstill, some plans for the property are slowly moving ahead. At a May meeting of the Pine Knoll Shores Board of Commissioners, preliminary plans were presented and approved for the ocean front property. TTie next phase of the project is getting the approvals necessary for the wastewater treatment system. The septic system that serviced the former hotel requires replacement. Once this wastewater treatment system is approved the number of rooms permitted on the site can be determined and final plans can be prepared. The preliminary plans project an upscale development similar to the properties on Radio Island and Spooners Creek. At this jtincture 48 luxury condos are anticipated with either two or three bedrooms on three levels with parking beneath. A clubhouse and a large ocean side terrace including a unique design swimming pool are also to be included. Nothing definite has been decided yet regarding the second phase of the project. This phase includes the former location of Jungle LandinAtlantic Beach. Itis projected that condos similar to the ocean front development will be built on this site. Their third phase includes property adjacent to the closed hardware store in Pine Knoll Shores. Although little effort has been put into specifics, it is likely to be developed into condo units similar to The Shutters properties; however, if s doubtful that this will happen anytime soon. Certainly a rapid turnaround of the economy would expedite the development of all three of these properties. However such a tumaroxmd does not appear to be on the immediate horizon. None-the-less,itis encouraging to see that some development is progressing albeit at a slow pace.
