Betty, who has been the voice and for many of us the face of Pine Knoll Shores for the past 19 years has retired. As of October 2, Betty is spending more time with her daughter, Joarma, who is in failing health. Betty also has a son, Peter, who lives in Raleigh and a 13-year-old grandson, Garrett. Betty's late husband, Joseph B. Peter ("Pete"), was Assistant Superintendent of Public Schools for Clinton, N.C., where the couple resided for 33 years before moving to this area. Prior to having children, Betty was a service representative for Carolina Telephone (now Embarq). Once her children started going to school, Betty reentered the work force and served as Director of the Clinton Chamber of Commerce until 1986 when moving to Pine Knoll Shore. Pete's sister and husband lived in PKS. Wanting to be near them and loving the water and fishing made PKS an easy retirement decision. For a period of time, Betty sold real estate in the area and also devoted many volunteer hours to the Station Club, a sheltered workshop for disabled individuals in Morehead City. The primary purpose of the visit was to initiate planning for the third-annual Pine Knoll Shores' Kayak for the Warriors event, which will take place on June 12, 2010. In this regard the trip was a great success. First, the RAC members had 90 minutes alone with Ms. Peggy Rochon, Director of the Southeast Region for the Hope For The Warriors. Ms. Rochon did a terrific job outlining the group's programs.
