Clean Beaches Week
The Pine Knoll Shores Recreation Advisory
Committee (RAC) is supporting "Clean Beaches
Week/' by posting signs and placing additional trash
receptacles at all Pine Knoll Shores public beach
accesses.
Clean Beaches Week is the "Earth Day" for beaches.
Held annually, from July 1-7, it is a celebration of the
healthy beach lifestyle. Clean Beaches Council (CBC) is
the lead organization for this national public awareness
campaign. This year CBC is urging Americans to
recognize and embrace the benefits of beaches in their
lives and is promoting the following four themes:
• Our Environment — leave no trace of litter, only
footprints at the beach,
• Dining - have a healthy meal every day and by
eating seafood at least twice a week.
• Recreation - get out and get active by playing,
surfing, fishing, walking or reading.
• Travel - reduce your carbon footprint through
energy efficiency, conservation, carpooling and other
green activities.
In the midst of Clean Beaches Week is the 4* of July,
the biggest beach holiday in America. Unfortunately,
it is also the dirtiest in terms of beach litter. To keep
the PKS beaches clean RAC and other volunteers
will gather on Monday, July 5, 9:00 a.m. at the Iron
Steamer Public Beach Access site to clean up unsightly
and dangerous litter left behind from the holiday

Special Award for a
Special Person
By Charlie McBriarty
A February 5 article in The News Times had an
immediate and direct reaction for Linda Strader;,
President of the Pine Knoll Shores Womens Club. Sh0
knew almost immediately that she could identify I
nominee for the newly created Dr. Joseph T. Barwick
Civic Award. The award, named in honor of the
former president of Carteret Community College,
was designed to identify a person demonstrating
community involvement and social responsibility that
has resulted in positive changes for residents of the
county. The article outlined the criteria for determining
the eventual recipient. Nominations were solicited
from groups and organizations throughout Carteret
County.
For Linda, the choice was very clear. Who better
than her friend and neighbor and past president of the
Womens Club? Her selection was verified by the club's
board and soundly endorsed by the membership. In the
letter of nomination,
Lindadescribed their
nominee as someone
always willing to
"step up to the plate"

Meet Ernie Rudolph
By Phyllis Makuck
Editor's Note: Another in the series on town employees.
Working as Director of Public Services since Jime 2007,
Ernie Rudolph is an invaluable member of the team
managing our town. His department, consisting of four
employees, has wide-ranging duties. It is responsible
for maintenance, repair, and new construction of
town buildings, grounds, streets, bridges, and beach
accesses. Mosquito control, eradication of invasive
non-native plants and residential yard-waste removal
are also under Public Services, as is the town's Water
Department.
I
Assuming responsibility for the operation and
maintenance of the Water Department was a natural
for Ernie Rudolph. He became a North Carolina
Licensed Water System Operator. As such, he often
shares some of the required day-to-day operational
duties for running the town's system.
