August 2010 • Vol. 7, No. 02 A Shoreline Community, Pine Knoll Shores, N.C. Town Hall 247-4353 Twenty and Counting By Jill Cross Annual Beach All of Kim Riley's friends and neighbors applaud her for her 20 years of toil and trouble working on the Fourth of July Parade, which Kim selflessly started (with help from her friend Betsy Hutchinson) when her two daughters were tiny. Now they're adults, helping with the parade. Good thing, as the parade has grown over the years and would be unmanageable if not for a few extra hands, Kim explained. We had over 200 people again this year, although we can't be certain of the exact number since we didn't have Mr. Brown to count for us—he was sorely missed. In the crowd were two babies under a year old, who will undoubtedly enjoy many more parades in their happy little lives here in Pine Knoll Shores. Every year, before the first decorated bike hits the tar, Kim starts the parade with a warm welcome after which the Pledge of Allegiance is said. Over the years, we've seen many interesting decorations and modes of transport including Nick Berry's go-cart, which he finally gave up for a car of his own! Even Brian Norris, a college student, who led the parade in his big white truck (with traditional July 4th music blaring), used to be in the parade when he was a kid. Memories are shared by all, and we have Kim Riley to be grateful for that. Thank you, Kim, for all the years of fun and comradeship you have contributed while we enjoy our celebration of independence together. We hope to enjoy many more parades with you at the helm. By Barbara Milhaven To celebrate Clean Beaches Week, members of the Pine Knoll Shores Recreation Advisory Committee— John Brodman, Mike Hargett, BJ Peters and Maureen Kilgallen along with Mayor Ken Jones, Barbara Milhaven, Martha Edwards and Ernie Rudolph (Public Services Director) met on July 5, at the Iron Steamer Public Beach Access site to tackle the debris left behind from the July 4* weekend, America's biggest beach holiday of the year. Andrea Pacetti, from Charmel 14, filmed segments of the effort to help get the word out to the public about the importance of maintaining our beaches. { -„a_ Veterans Had a Hot Time By Kathy Falandys Local Cleanup Crew: From the left Ken Jones, BJ Peter, Barbara Milhaven, Maureen Kilgallen, John Brodman and Mike Hargett. The Korean War became known as the "Forgotten War," thus we have "forgotten veterans" of that war, many of whom served in combat with little training and inadequate weapons, risking their lives, when called. Some gave their lives; still others served elsewhere during that era, ready to do what was needed when required. Whatever their role, they were honored for their service. The rededication of the Veterans' Memorial took place at its new location in Veterans' Park. Visit it if you have not already done so. It is located behind town hall and overlooks Bogue Sound, another gem of this community. The park boasts a new flagpole and flag, approved by the commissioners as a gift from you, the citizens of Pine Knoll Shores.
