Shor Two Millionth Visitor The September 2010 • Vol. 1, No. 03 A Shoreline Community, Pine Knoll Shores, N.C. Town Hall 247-4353 Sculpt for Wildlife 2010 By Trish Slape Another year has come and gone and with it another Sculpt for Wildlife for the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter. The day dawned calm and clear against muchheralded storms on the horizon. With 14 teams registered for the event, we knew we were in for an exciting day. It began quietly enough with teams begirming construction using different strategies. By lunchtime, sand structures began to emerge— figures began to take shape. It was really exciting seeing the sculptures coming alive. The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores on Monday, September 16, celebrated its two millionth visitor since reopening in 2006 after a major expansion. At 10:16 a.m.. Aquarium Director Allen Monroe welcomed Gray and Tara Sherrill and sons Charlie, age 6, and Sam, age 3. Together, the family put the total over the top. Aquarium staff greeted them with cheers, a kazoo band and a special appearance of the Aquarium's Surmy the Shark mascot. The Sherrills, from Greensboro, didn't know about the countdown and were pleasantly surprised with the fanfare—and a package of prizes. "We just decided to come and let the boys see the fish this morning," Mrs. Sherrill said. Gray Sherrill had been to the aquarium as a yoimgster before the expansion, but, otherwise, it was the first visit for the family. The Sherrills made the aquarium outing with friends Jennifer Cross-Green and Michael Green and their two young sons, also of Greensboro, who are regular visitors. "It's great to see so many families come to the aquarium," Monroe said. "Whether it is mom and dad with the kids or grandparents bringing their grandchildren, they all enjoy spending time together while they look at the beautiful and interesting fish. Plus they get a chance to learn more about the fascinating aquatic environments of North Carolina." The Sherrills were awarded an armual family membership in the North Carolina Aquarium Society, a $200 shopping spree in the aquarium's Gift Shop, a behind- the-scenes tour and passes to the aquarium's bird program, a two- night stay at an area hotel, dinner for two at a local restaurant and a gourmet "tea for two" gift basket. The Sherrills waited to claim the prizes imtil after touring the aquarium. The boys were anxious to do what they came to do—see the many animals. "They were especially fascinated by the sharks," Gray Sherrill reported. Around noon, the pizza arrived, and then the skies opened up. The storms that had been threatening all week had finally arrived, and the downpour began. I thought all might be lost as the rains continued, but during that whole time, the sculptors continued sculpting. It was amazing! They never gave up. As the rain pelted down, some of the sculptures stood there, strong and proud, but some began to crumble to the ground.
