Not only is it a spectacular festival, but also the story behind it is very intriguing. It first begins more than 3,000 years ago, when Jacob, a Hebrew, arrived in Egypt with his twelve songs. Canaan, the land of the Hebrews, had been stricken with an awful famine. Fortunately, the Pharaoh of Egypt was kind and gave the Hebrews per mission to dwell in the Land of Goshen, which is the eastern part of the Nile Delta. For a while, they lived in peace. Years after Jacob and his sons died, their heirs did not return to Canaan. (Continued on page 3) April 2011 Rare Beach Visitors Some “visitors” on local beaches have caught the attention of members from the North Carolina Maritime Museum’s Cape Lookout Studies Pro gram. During winter months, sightings of seals on beaches and in North Caro lina waters are becoming increasingly frequent. The adult harp seal identified on Wednesday February 23 could be a first for the county, according to Museum Natural Science Curator Keith Rittmas- ter.
