MARK YOUR CALENDAR NOW. The New Bern Civic Theatre will present Steel Magnolias, by Robert Har- ling, beginning on May 5. The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by eager new assistant Annelle, the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, eccen tric millionaire Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and local social leader M’Lynn, whose daugh ter Shelby is about to marry a “good ol’ boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee, sharp jabs and bantering, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby, who risks pregnancy, forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength and love which give the play and its characters the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad. The dress rehearsal will be presented on May 5 at 7 p.m. with open seating at $7. Regular performances will begin at 8 p.m. on the evenings of May 6, 7, 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21 with Sunday Matinees at 2 p.m. on May 8 and 15. Tickets are $18 advance or $20 door and students and active duty military $10 with photo ID. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 633-0567 or visit www.newberncivictheatre.org.
