Is Paid Parking Working?

In May of this year, Pine Knoll Shores instituted paid beach
parking on weekends and holidays only for its two largest beach
accesses at Memorial Park and the Iron Steamer. Parking is free
after 3:30 p.m. on weekends, on all other days and at all the
smaller beach accesses throughout town. Paid parking at the two

Wade and
Charlie

Wade and Charlie have been
friends for at least 12, maybe 15,
years. Wade lives year round in Salter
Path. Charlie disappears for the win
ter and returns every spring. When in
town, Charlie visits daily, going to the
back door first. Then, if Wade does
not appear, Charlie goes around to
the front to look for him.
Wade is Wade Willis, who, with
Vesta, owns Willis’ Seafood. Charlie
is an elegant great egret. “He may
not even be a “he” says Wade. “Can’t
really tell if it’s a male or female. I just
started calling him Charlie years ago.”
Laughing, Vesta says, “Some
times, I think he cares more for that
bird than he does for me.” Wade just
smiles.
He gives Charlie mainly shrimp
and flounder—usually about three
pounds of shrimp and one flounder
per day. “The fact is that bird would
eat as much as Id give him,” says
Wade. “He’ll take what I hand him,
fly off and come back for more. If
he doesn’t see me and get a handout
at the back door, he comes ‘round
the front and stares in the window,
lookin’ for me, lookin’ for more
shrimp or fish. Must have a nest with
little ones somewhere.”
Indeed, the long tail plumes sug
gest the bird is breeding. Great egrets
produce a single brood each year. The
