Sculpt for Wildlife (continued from 1) of Swansboro for her “Bird Lady from Mary Poppins.” Pagliughi also took the coveted Peoples Choice Award. Fun was had by all throughout the day as spectators came to see the progress made by the competing sculptors. Sandy Feat, the professional sand sculpting team from Raleigh, made the trek back to our neck of the woods to judge the event and were on hand all day creating a sand sculpture to demonstrate different techniques, answering any questions for the contestants and just giving all- around tips to help everyone to show off their entries in the best possible way. Sandy Feats theme this year was to honor the Carteret Chamber of Commerces Reverse Draw ing “Let it Be -Woodstock Reunion” with a “Hippie Owl” and his “Rolling Stones Buddy.” Throughout the day, as people came through to view the prog ress of the sculptors’ work, we treated them to various visits from members of our education department. At different times, we ' scheduled up-close and personal viewings of “Pepper,” an Eastern Screech Owl, “Gabe,” an American Kestrel, “Dinah,” and our resi dent Barred Owl. This year “Blue” made his debut. Blue is a Blue Jay that came in to the shelter last year with issues with his tail feathers that hinder his flight abilities enough that he will never be released. A grant received two years ago from the Carteret Chapter of the North Carolina Community Foundation allowed us to build a songbird habitat, which gives us the ability to pro vide housing for songbirds like Blue for the first time in our 20- year history. Presentations of our residents give people a chance to see a few of the animals that we provide homes for at the shelter, and although all of them are permanent residents, they represent many of the animals that we actually rehab and release, and they give us an opportunity to share with the public what we actually do. It’s very exciting because for a lot of people, this is the only opportunity they have to see this kind of animal in real life. Although we look at the Sculpt for Wildlife as more of an out reach opportunity, it is still a fundraiser for O.W.L.S. As long as we make a little money, it’s a win-win situation. The only way for us to continue to be able to care for wildlife, which is our ultimate goal, is to continue to make our program known to the public and to continue to introduce ourselves to people who don’t know us. Well, what better way to do it than by holding a totally awesome, fun day at the beach? We were able to meet a lot of new people, and hopefully by seeing what we do, they will in turn see the need for supporting our cause. The first step is to let them know who we are, and that’s what Sculpt for Wildlife is all about. The Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter would appreciate it if every one would thank our generous sponsors who made this event possible, provided prizes for the 20*-^ annual Sculpt for Wildlife and showed their support in our quest to preserve our native wildlife.
